There’s a form of dissonance when something tastes completely opposite from how it looks, and Swensen’s nails it with their all-new Fried Chicken Ice Cream. This palate playground looks and feels exactly like the guilty pleasure we all know and love, but is a creamy, icy treat in reality.

The most common question I got was, “so it the ice cream actually chicken-flavoured?” and for the sanity of us all, the answer, thankfully, is no.

Photo: Swensen’s Singapore

The ‘chicken’ centre is vanilla ice cream and the details are nailed down to a tee with a chocolate ‘bone’ that’s not only edible, but also adds a tiny cocoa-y touch to the dessert. The ice cream is encased by an outer made of feuilletine and cornflakes that form the ‘crispy crust’ of the confection.

While this hurled me into brief moment of confusion at first, all doubts were cleared the very second I pulled the ‘chicken’ out of the box and took a deep crunch. For one, it miraculously survived the journey all the way over to me still intact—the hurdle I was initially the most worried about. Also, the fact that it’s a snack that can be eaten in its entirety makes it both convenient and worth your while.

If you’re worried about how the vanilla, chocolate, and cornflakes come together, to that I can only answer, beautifully. It’s a textural party on the palate and keeps the vanilla from falling flat, or from being too one-note. And besides, a little attention to detail has always scored a brownie point or two.

Savoury-toothed ol’ me isn’t usually one for plain novelty, let alone in a dessert, but I’d dare say that the Fried Chicken Ice Cream is well on my “order again” list. Aside from looking downright whack, the quality of the dessert actually does live up to the hype. It walks the fine line of interesting yet delicious — and that’s a phrase I haven’t been able to say in a while now.

Additional sauces and toppings for your ‘chicken’ such as butterscotch sauce, cold fudge, diced almonds, chocolate jimmies, and others are also available at S$1.07 each.

The “Fried Chicken” Ice Cream is sold in a pint (S$11.80 for two pieces) or a box (S$42.80 for eight pieces) and can be purchased from all Swensen’s and Earle Swensen’s outlets from now onwards. Alternatively, get it delivered via foodpanda, GrabFood, or Deliveroo, and hope that it reaches you in one piece just as it did for me.

At this point, no one knows when our next trip to South Korea will be, but it doesn’t stop us from holding out hope. Whether it’s the shopping along Ewha street you miss, or tucking into a piping hot plate of jjimdak on a blustery autumn evening, we’ve got your back. Okay, perhaps not so much on the former, but here are 16 places to get authentic Korean food in Singapore to tide you over while waiting for the chance to be back in the +82.

1. HANJIP Korean Grill House

Photo: @hanjip.sg/facebook

Striving to be the most “authentic traditional Korean barbeque restaurant in Singapore”, HANJIP Korean Grill House is quite literally one of Singapore’s biggest Korean barbeque restaurants, occupying a space of over 5000 square feet.

The Clarke Quay-based establishment boasts a range of Kurobuta Berkshire Pork, Australia Wagyu, and USDA Prime Beef selections, and some of their signature cuts are aged for enhanced flavour and texture — all while remaining delightfully tender.

Book a table here.

???? 3C River Valley Road, #01-11 Clarke Quay, Singapore 179022
????️ 11.30am–2.30pm, 5pm–10pm (Daily)

2. Jangsu Korean BBQ

Photo: @Jangsubbq.sg/facebook

Those looking for no-frills, straight-up-delicious Korean fare won’t be disappointed at Jangsu Korean BBQ, because that’s what they do here, and boy don’t they do it well. Situated along Teck Chye Terrace, it’s a quick walk away from Serangoon station.

The Korean BBQ restaurant is run by a Korean couple who serve aged barbecue meat grilled over a classic hotplate. For those dining in a group, BBQ Set A (S$68 for 2 pax, S$99 for 4 pax) offers beef loin, beef sirloin, marinated beef, steamed egg, a choice of soup, and of course, the perennial banchan (side dishes), that mark the uber-Korean meal we so love.

???? 19 Teck Chye Terrace, Singapore 545725
????️ 11.30am–3pm, 5pm–10.30pm (Daily)

3. +82 Plus Eight Two

Photo: @pluseighttwosg/instagram

Opened by BTOB’s Seo Eun-kwang himself, it doesn’t get any more authentically Korean than +82 PlusEightTwo. The dessert cafe is located in the heart of Dhoby Ghaut, and boasts an industrial-chic interior that quite frankly reflects the cafe culture that has been all the rage in South Korea.

Here, you’ll find bingsu, fruit smoothies, lattes, sodas, toasts, and muffins, amongst other sweet treats, and is overall an absolute playground for the sweet-toothed.

???? 9 Bras Basah Road, Rendezvous Gallery #01-02, Singapore 189559
????️ 11am–10pm (Sun–Thurs), 11am–10.30pm (Sat & Sun)

4. Pocha In A Forest

Photo: @pocha_forest.sg/instagram

Here’s one for a fully-immersive experience — Pocha In A Forest will have you sitting underneath a tented booth, on iconic yellow plastic stools, and gathering around aluminium tables that your dishes barely fit on.

For the uninitiated, a pojangmacha is a street stall, often out of a tent, that typically sells street foods such as tteokbokki, sundae, odeng, and hotteok — perfect on a chilly winter evening. The Singaporean-Korean owners of Pocha In A Forest know what’s up because they’ve introduced this first-of-its-kind concept in Singapore. It’s here where you’ll find interesting bar bites such as Fried Prawn Head ($12), Chicken Heart Skewers (S$12), and Dried Pollack Fish (S$12), as well as comforting favourites like Bibimbap (S$16), Kimbap (from S$7), and Spicy Instant Noodles ($12).

???? 36 Prinsep Street, #01-01, Singapore 188648
????️ 3pm–10.30pm (Mon), 12pm–10.30pm (Tues–Sun)

5. SBCD Korean Tofu House

Photo: @SBCDSingapore/facebook

This one’s a common favourite amongst those who appreciate a good Korean meal — SBCD Korean Tofu House is home of the soondubu and a powerhouse of flavour. Starting from the hotel culinary scene, Chef Nam Kyoung Soo founded the tofu house back in 2016 with the mission of bringing authentic Korean fare to Singapore.

Tuck into sizzling hot plates of Bulgogi (S$29.90), Tteok Galbi (S$29.90), or Spicy Baby Octopus (S$29.90) and receive a bowl of hot stone rice, a soon tofu of your choice, as well as an array of side dishes when you opt for the combo meals. Otherwise, all mains and soon tofu are available a la carte as well.

Lauded as the “originator of Korean fried chicken restaurants in Singapore”, Kko Kko Na Ra is built on family recipes from owner Madam Lee’s mother who lived in Jeon La Do, a province in Korea known for their toothsome cuisine. The establishment is also supposedly known to be the first to introduce ma neul gan jang, or garlic soy sauce chicken, in Singapore serving wings and drums.

But really, diversity’s the name of the game here at Kko Kko Na Ra because there’s a good chance that you’ll find whatever dishes you associate with Korean cuisine on the menu. And when I say diversity, I really mean anything from a hearty bowl of Sundae Gukbap (S$25), Bo Ssam (S$38), Jok Bal (S$48), Jjim Dak (S$48) — which were all local favourites that I often had during my half-year-long stay in South Korea — to the more familiar Budae Jjigae (S$38), Fried Chicken (S$20 for 8 pieces, S$35 for 16 pieces), and Neng Myeong (S$18) that never fails to get Singaporeans excited.

Noodle Star K does exactly what its namesake promises — delivers a host of noodle-based dishes that are both Korean classics as well as widely appreciated by Singaporeans far and wide. Popular for their speciality Naengmyeon that’s made with buckwheat flour, arrowroot, potato, sweet potato, and other ingredients, the noodles are boiled and then put in a cold bath and topped with seasoning and garnish.

Situated on the fourth floor of Beauty World Centre, Pink Candy isn’t your usual run-off-the-mill Korean eating house.
If you’re running through location ideas for a Korean barbecue meal, chances are that Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant would’ve popped up. Coming from a friend whom I’d consider the authority in KBBQ, Guiga sits amongst her top few favourites in Singapore, and for good reason.

Some might recognise the establishment from its location at the cusp of Tanjong Pagar Road, but the restaurant also has the chops to prove itself worthy of its title. There’s no shortage of protein options here with Sliced Pork Belly (S$18), Marinated Pork Ribs (S$22), and Black Pig Fresh Pork Belly (S$25), an offering more commonly found on Jeju Island.

Branded as a “traditional Korean restaurant”, Todamgol’s dining experience is about as authentic as authentic gets. Right off the bat, what comes into view is a wood-forward, plant-laden storefront that opens up to a warmly-lit interior that fondly embodies the Korean hospitality most might remember from their holidays.

Todamgol is perfect for anyone looking for more niche Korean dishes that might not necessarily be available in the average restaurant. Take the Jjukkumi Bibimbap (S$14) for example, or the Anglerfish Soup (S$45) and Oyster Pancake (S$30) that provide more interesting options for the adventurous or those who straight up miss a traditional taste of Korea.

Taking a break from “go chu jang this” and “yang nyeom that”, Meta Restaurant takes things up a few notches, having been awarded one Michelin star in 2017, 2018, and 2019. It’s not everyday that a Korean restaurant makes an appearance on the Michelin list, but what’s innovation if not pushing boundaries, I say.

The menu is divided into two meals — Lunch (S$198++) and Dinner (S$258++), and there’s much to be excited about.
Speaking of diversity, Dal-In Korean Restaurant holds its own through the vast options and a menu that seems to just go on forever. I’m generally skeptical of big menus because they tend to go down the “jack of all trades” route, but if it’s anything I’ve learnt during my time in Korea, it is that Koreans are as good at multitasking as they are at banging out pop band members.

The usual suspects like Kimchi Jeon (S$15 for small, S$22 for large), Yukgaejang (S$16), and Bibimbap (S$12) are unfailing, and there are also sharing portions such as Gochujang Jjigae (S$40), Beoseot Bulgogi (S$45), and Chilli Prawns (S$35) for when you’re dining with pals.
Their signature dish comes by way of Suyuk (S$25), which is boiled and then enjoyed with a selection of sauces, and is eaten as a ‘clean’, healthy dish.
It’s been a hot minute since we’ve immersed ourselves in anything Disney — it seems like reliving favourite movies on Disney+ is the closest we’ll get these days; and new series or shows, if we’re lucky.

But just as most are in the thick of being travel-starved, Pop-Up Disney! A Mickey Celebration in Singapore swoops in and salvages the holiday plans this season.

Photo: Pop-up Disney!

In its first Southeast Asian instalment, the Mickey-centric pop-up spans across more than 1,350 sqm at Suntec Convention Centre and houses seven experiential rooms that are sure to seal in plenty of photo opportunities.

Photo: Pop-up Disney!

Some installations to look out for include Mickey and Minnie’s Love Room that’s brightened up with a huge Minnie Mouse bow sofa, an infinity room filled with the iconic Mickey Mouse ears, as well as a curious tunnel where you’ll find Sorcerer Mickey.

Photo: Pop-up Disney!

Perhaps regarded as one of the highlights, the Singapore-themed room puts a local spin on the classic characters that many have come to know and love, and celebrates Mickey in a “truly Singaporean way”, as organisers put it.

The pop-up is slated to reach us on 19 November 2021 and runs until 20 March 2022. And while there’s plenty of time to pay a visit, there’s no telling how quickly tickets will sell out.

Ticket prices go at S$20 for children aged three to 12, and S$25 for visitors above 12 years old. Upgrade your ticket and receive a Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse headband at S$35, and there’s also a bundle deal at S$98 for five tickets if you’re going in a group.

Get your tickets here.

I’m guilty of being that one basic person who makes it a point to have at least one Peppermint Mocha and one Toffee Nut Latte to mark the arrival of my favourite holiday of the year when really, it’s just a reason to write off the calories for the season.

The good news is that with POKKA’s all-new limited edition Peppermint Mocha bottled beverage, we no longer have to hold our breath to get our hands on the minty drink, but the bad news is that it’s only available for a limited time.

Photo: @7elevensg/instagram

A couple of days ago, 7-Eleven Singapore had already teased the introduction of this latest addition and only just unveiled the Peppermint Mocha yesterday evening.

Photo: Screengrab via @7Eleven.Singapore/facebook

Enthused followers of the convenience store also took to the comments section to throw their hats into the ring by making inferred guesses about the mystery drink, and most hit the nail right on the head — a testament to Singaporeans’ unparalleled adoration for anything and everything that’s edible.

Photo: @7elevensg/instagram

The beverage is made with real beans and low-fat milk, so you can be certain that what awaits is the real deal condensed into one succinct bottle, with half the guilt. The POKKA Peppermint Mocha is best served chilled or over ice, so now’s a good time as any to bust out the coffee glasses, snag a slice of cake or two, and savour the drink in your very own home cafe.

Other delicious finds you can get at 7-Eleven also include their Thai-inspired convenience meals as well as this frozen 100PLUS hydration bar popsicle.

Halloween is nigh, and with it comes a slew of holiday-themed treats and specials. And while some might argue that the ghouls of horror pop culture like The Nun or Annabelle are amongst the most terrifying things one could possibly run into, there might just be scarier things that go bump in the night, I say. Like these Spicy Chocolate Chicken offerings from MOM’S TOUCH, for example.

MOM’S TOUCH Spicy Chocolate Chicken

Photo: MOM’S TOUCH

Aside from the familiar MOM’s Spicy Thigh Burger that oozes with a bright fiery spice in between juicy bites of tender chicken thigh, the Bloody Burger Set (S$10.50) also gets you a regular Coke, as well as one piece of Spicy Chocolate Chicken. Yep, you read that right, the Spicy Chocolate Chicken is your usual fried chicken indulgence with a twist that might or might not be called for — a layer of rich chocolate that coats the already-battered treat.

Photo: MOM’S TOUCH

Those who can’t get enough of the unlikely duo might jump at the Freaky Chicken Set (S$9.50) which sees two pieces of Spicy Chocolate Chicken, one coleslaw, and one regular coke. But if you’re in dire need of some form of normalcy (and understandably so), the Dracula Chicken (S$19.90) set boasts three pieces of Mom’s Fried Chicken in spicy or original alongside three more pieces of Spicy Chocolate Chicken to keep the meal perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

The halloween specials are available for dine-in and takeaway only, and are only offered at the Paya Lebar Quarter, Eastwood Centre, and The Centrepoint outlets.

This special runs from now until 1 November 2021 only, so if you’re going to get a taste at all, be sure to do so during the month of October.

The only thing better than being well-rested these days is being well-rested and hydrated. And as a reminder to us all to load up on H2O and electrolytes, the new Hydration Bar Popsicle (S$1.50) from 100PLUS arrives in Singapore so that we can stare Singapore’s relentless heat in the face and say, “not today”.

The bar comes frozen and fits snugly in the palm of your hand — perfect for taking bites out of after a jog or in-between exchanging office tea with Jenny from finance. It’s sold at S$1.50 per bar, and can be found at 7-Eleven outlets across the island.

Just like the 100PLUS beverage, the hydration bar possessed the same saccharine flavour, but tended slightly towards the sweeter side. A colleague and I ended up splitting the bar between ourselves, which was just the tiny mid-afternoon boost we needed after our boss so fervently over-ordered during lunch. When you’re not sipping out of a cup of bubble tea or savouring that afternoon latte, perhaps the hydration bar is worth considering for an energising mid-day alternative.

So the next time you’re looking for sweet respite from the unrelenting weather, know that the hydration bar’s always in your corner.

Just like pineapple on pizza, french fries on ice cream, and bacon and whiskey, I can think of a few other things in the food scene that’ll get people riled up, and all hot and bothered. I, for one, know a friend or two whom you’ll never catch at Birds of Paradise, but I fall into camp ‘yay’ when it comes to the famed gelato joint. But hate them or love them, they’re here to stay, and more recently, bringing a star-studded collaboration with “The Road Ahead” singer Linying in the exciting new ice cream flavour, Springtime Red Berries Ginger Bloom (S$17 per pint).

Photo: Birds of Paradise

In celebration of Linying’s new single, Springtime, the limited-edition gelato concoction is a robust celebration of red currants, raspberries, strawberries, house-cooked rhubarb jam, as well as local torch ginger flower. It walks the fine line of aromatic, with a kiss of zest — the tangy dreams of every sweltering Singaporean out there.

Photo: @linyingmusic/instagram

“I thought it would be sick to do an ice cream collab for the next single release and holy s**t, here it is,” writes the singer on Instagram, whom herself refers to Birds of Paradise as “one of Singapore’s great national treasures”.

The special edition gelato is available in boutiques and via delivery online from now onwards, for a limited time only.

Some other Birds of Paradise gelato favourites include the likes of Strawberry Basil (S$17 per pint), Sea-Salt Hojicha (S$17 per pint), Earl Grey & Lemongrass (S$17 per pint), as well as the Midnight Gianduja (S$20) that come served atop BOP’s signature thyme cone. Otherwise, there’s always the option of adding Thyme Cone Chips (S$2) as a sprinkle to complete your favourite sweet treat.

It’s strawberry season, and LiHO is back with their seasonal Korean strawberry drinks.

The series is available at all outlets, and they’re made from exclusive Korean Seolhyang strawberries, one of the sweetest, juiciest and softest variety of strawberries in the world.

Here are the flavors available.

Limited edition Liho strawberry series

[NEW] K-Strawberry CheezHO Cake

Prices: Medium ($7.50), Large ($8.50)

The latest edition to the strawberry series, K-Strawberry CheezHO Cake is a concoction of five layers – tea jelly, white pearls, strawberries, fresh milk and topped off with LiHO’s signature cheese foam.

The drink is then finished off with a drizzle of chocolate sauce, adding a tint of cocoa to compliment the velvety drink. Since it mimics the texture of a cheesecake, it makes a great dessert.

K-Strawberry Latte

Prices: Medium ($7.10), Large ($8.10), Hot option ($7.10)

Strawberry milk is a popular treat served in Korea cafes during the summer, and the K-Strawberry Latte is as close as you can get to that taste.

With strawberries crushed and lightly blended with fresh milk, the acidity of the fruit cuts the creaminess of the drink perfectly.

K-Strawberry Jing Syuan

Prices: Medium ($7.10), Large ($8.10), Hot option ($7.10)

Now that the rainy season in Singapore is over, warm humidity has set in. To beat the heat, the K-Strawberry Jing Syuan makes a refreshing drink consisting of strawberry bits, blended with Jing Syuan tea.

The taste of Jing Syuan tea is light, creamy and flowery, and sometimes compared to milk. So if you’re looking for sweet treat without the guilt, this drink is the way to go.

Exclusive LiHO strawberry merchandise

From left to right: Tumbler ($19.90), Reusable Cup Holder ($3.90) and EZlink Card ($7)

Besides launching their drinks, LiHO has also came up with exclusive strawberry-themed merchandise. With 2 strawberry drinks purchased, you’ll be able to get the Reusable Cup Holder at $1 instead.

The Ordinary just dropped its new concealer, and it’s going for only $9.

The skincare company started out with a serum line, and soon launched a foundation series which quickly became a cult-favourite. So it’s no surprise that they’re following up with the concealer.

Hides scars, acne and hyperpigmentation

Photo: instagram/@deciem

The Ordinary Concealer currently has 36 shades which corresponds with the foundation series, and 15 more shades will be released by this year.

The product is reviewed to be highly pigmentated and works perfect for masking acne scars, dark circles, and hyperpigmentation. The concealer shades have also been created to be slightly lighter than the foundation’s since research has pointed out this preference.

36 shades for any and everyone

Photo: instagram/@deciem

Shades are categorized into four categories: 1 for fair to lighter tones; 2 for medium tones; 3 for dark/deep tones; and 4 for deeper tones.

In addition, huge focus is placed on the undertone, and despite being matte, the product does not look flat on skin.

With letters added to the shade code to identify the undertone, users will have an easier time deciding on what suits their skin most. P (pink) and R (red) indicate cool undertones, while N indicates a neutral undertone and Y (yellow) indicates a warm undertone.

The concealer is housed in a small tube with a thin nozzle for easy application. Testers of the brand have also feedbacked that the undertones remain seated throughout long wears of the formula – a rare find in the cosmetic line.

At just $9, we expect the product to fly off the shelves once it reaches Singapore. Though it hasn’t been launched locally, the concealer can be purchased on Beauty Bay or The Ordinary site itself.

If you can’t wait, there are some listings already on carousell. However, they’re slightly marked up – a small price to pay for good skin.

With Netflix's Shuffle Play, there's no need to mindlessly browse through TV shows anymore.

Netflix has confirmed that the ‘Shuffle Play’ feature will be launched this year, and it’s something to look forward to.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably spent a good few minutes shuffling through the deck of movie posters, reading synopses, and hoping to find something else worth watching. Shuffle Play solves that.

Netflix boasts a range of movies to watch. However, the choices can get a little overwhelming sometimes. With the new Shuffle Play feature, Netflix will randomly play content for you based on your viewing history, and even those you’ve saved into your list.

The idea is to skip browsing entirely, while quickly finding content that’s tailored to your tastes.

Test runs on this new feature started last year, where Netflix introduced a shuffle mode button. The button plays random episodes of a single series and was well-received by sitcom fans. Netflix also created a ‘Play Something‘ sidebar button in July 2020, although its function was identical to Shuffle Play.

The Shuffle Play button isn’t available on the Netflix mobile app and desktop site yet, but the company has announced its release to be scheduled for the first half of 2021.

Creating an experience closer to traditional TV

However, the feature is yet to be named. Co-CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings has jokingly chimed to call it ‘I’m feeling lucky’, a reference to Google’s search feature that brings you to the top web page search result. Of course, it was shot down by COO Greg Peters.

But whatever it is, subscribers are sure to look forward for its release. Afterall, it does mimic the randomized experience of traditional TV.
