Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar doesn’t monkey around when it comes to their coffee, seeing how they are known as the home of Singapore’s first Slayer Espresso Machine.

Try their brews for yourself, including Ristretto (S$4.50), Cappuccino (S$5.50), and Gula Melaka Cold Brew (S$8.50).

Another unique line of drinks they have are their alcoholic milkshakes, including Violet Crumble (S$18) consisting of vanilla ice cream, butterscotch schnapps, honey, and Violet Crumble, Dom Pedro (S$18) featuring vanilla ice cream and Monkey Shoulder Whiskey, and Toblerone (S$18).

HOUSE DOWNSTAIRS

When your taste buds can’t decide which way to go, check out HOUSE DOWNSTAIRS with their cheekily-named Dong Xi menu, which translates to East West.

Western delights offered include Spiced Baked Eggs (S$16), Potato Rosti with Sour Cream (S$10), and the plainly named Fat (S$16), a hearty mix of smashed avocado, tomatoes, feta, sunny egg, salad, and sourdough.

Or turn to the East for some Gochujang Chicken With Rice (S$16), Laksa Goreng (S$17), and more. 

Anyone with a second stomach for dessert here? The menu also hilariously introduces pastries and desserts under the Extra Space category.

Nothing like cooling off in Singapore’s heat with the quintessential ice cream at Burnt Cones. The beloved gelato chain’s Sunset Way outlet shares a close proximity to both Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic.

Get a Single Scoop (Premium: S$5, Signature: S$6, Supremo: S$7) or a Double (Premium: S$9, Signature: S$11, Supremo: S$13). 

While their flavours rotate, some you may recognise include Madagascan Vanilla, 85% Dark Chocolate, Reese’s Peanut Butter, and Ube.

Bread Yard

Singapore Polytechnic has Oasis Hideout, which serves quality Western fare, but Bread Yard is here to bring some competition.

Bread Yard’s name hints that it’s better known for its artisanal bakes, but to really fill you up, get their affordable pastas available during weekday lunch hours.

From Aglio Olio (S$8) and Mafaldine Pesto (S$8) to Fettuccine Miso Cream (S$8) and Capellini Mentaiko (S$8), Bread Yard’s pastas will surely satisfy any craving.

Abundance

There’s no need to travel for Taiwanese fare when we’ve got a piece of Taiwan here at Abundance, a restaurant bar in Lengkok Bahru.

You can find an a-bun-dance of the classic Taiwanese street food Gua Bao (S$7.90), or pork belly bun, and CCB (Crispy Chicken Bao) (S$7.90).

Meeting: Masterchef, CG Version

1 July 2025 / 3pm–6pm (plus 30 minutes of golden hour photo taking, duh) / Coriander Leaf @ Singapore Polo Club

Attendees: Editorial x Marketing (8 hungry girlies)

Agenda:

• Have chaotic fun while bonding with team members
• Discover who should never be allowed to cook again

Notes:

3pm

We split into two teams with big dreams and ambitious menus. Team 1 consisted of Maeve, Wing Xin, Eunice, and Kris. On the other end, Team 2 is made up of Rei, Glenda, Yan, and Xuan.

Dishes

• Team 1: Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls with Nuoc Cham & Singapore Chilli Crab
• Team 2: Pandan Chicken with Sesame Dipping Sauce & Pandan Flavoured Coconut Crepe Rolls with Pandan Sugar Syrup

It’s time to battle it out!  

Maeve: We were first given a very encouraging pep talk because this wasn’t just a fun cookout — it’s a cooking competition. Yes, a competition. We split into teams and within minutes, we were doing math (my most horrid skill) to figure out our ingredient ratios. A humbling experience.

Glenda: Honestly, I went in thinking it would be a chill cooking class. Instead, it felt like I’d been thrown to the wolves. It’s truly Masterchef, without the “master” part (unless you count boiling water). Cue the internal panicking while pretending I knew what I was doing.

4pm

Wing Xin: I was peacefully plucking coriander when I heard screaming from the kitchen… Only to look up and see Eunice freaking out over the live crab she volunteered to kill! So hilarious.

Maeve: We spent so long filming the crab that we had to rush to butcher it. I got a little too enthusiastic with the cleaver and, well, accidentally cut the crab in half. I guess it’s definitely dead now. 

Glenda: I was somehow assigned as Team 2’s leader, which wasn’t ideal considering my last real cooking experience was in my Food & Nutrition class back in secondary school. Still, I took charge of chopping and marinating the meat for the Pandan Chicken (division of labour at its finest). 

5pm

Maeve: It was a mad race to the end (with a lot of help from the Coriander Leaf team). The plating was completed in the nick of time as they counted us down — somewhat haphazard but ultimately edible. 

Glenda: Presentation? Oh right, we forgot. Thankfully, Rei pulled a heartfelt story out of thin air to save our team from embarrassing failure. In her words, our pandan crepes are now kampung huts, and the pandan chicken is a boat (we could only nod and clap in impressed amusement).

Wing Xin: It’s golden hour, and you know what that means — mandatory content shooting for the girls. We ran over to the field to catch the ongoing polo game with our designated photographer (me, of course).

Maeve: As natural chefs, we taste-tested everything along the way. Of course. They’re currently wrapping up the photography session, so in the spirit of food blogging, I’m going to rate the dishes we made.

Dish Ratings by Maeve

Team 1:

• Singapore Chilli Crab – 10/10 (worth the labour and screams of slaughtering live creatures)
• Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls and Nuoc Cham – 8/10 (beautiful but so, so spicy)

Team 2:

• Pandan Chicken – 7.5/10 (great aroma but was too hot to unwrap so I’m docking points for burning my fingers) 
• Pandan Coconut Crepe Rolls – 10/10 (I ate so many that I felt sick after) 

6pm

It’s time to get serious with the prize presentation, and of course, tucking into our handmade dishes.

Maeve: In true Confirm Good fashion, both teams tied (a rare occurrence at Coriander Leaf, but we’re just that good).

Key Findings:

• Do it scared, but do it anyway (shoutout to Eunice for facing her crab demons in public)
• Always make sure your projects are edible 

Actionables:

• Pitch the next OOO bonding activity
• Continue hunting down the best deals for our readers (you’re welcome)

Conclusion:
10/10 would come back for the food, the fun vibes and of course, the horses!

No Horse Run Cafe needs no introduction. The cafe has gone viral online for their unique gelato flavours and waffles, but it’s a great lunch spot too.

F.I.C.

At first glance, F.I.C. looks like your standard Vietnamese food spot. But upon closer inspection, the homey eatery offers some less common finds in Singapore.

Typical Vietnamese fare such as Fresh Viet Rolls (S$5.45) and Grilled Lemongrass Chicken Salad (S$5.45) can be found here.

But a unique, light bite you can try is F.I.C.’s pizzas made from rice paper used in Vietnamese spring rolls. These paper pizzas come in three flavours — Chicken Sausage (S$3.30), Lemongrass Chicken (S$3.50), and Mentaiko Crabmeat (S$3.80).

Yes, if you haven’t figured it out yet, rumeL is lemur spelt backwards so the joint and food are all decorated with adorable lemurs.

Australia’s number one pizza chef Silvo Gropelli is the mastermind behind the special in-house pizza dough recipe and the full pizza range.

So with our expectations set high, we sampled rumeL for ourselves to find out whether it’s truly bang for your buck.

Here at rumeL, pizza doesn’t have to wait till dinner or lunchtime. Why wait when you can start your first meal of the day with their specialty breakfast pizzas?

Crushed Peanut Butter, Kaya Butter, and Chicken Floss go for S$5, while Veggie, Margherita, and Mozza B.L.T are priced at S$6.80 during breakfast hours from 8am to 11am.

But to really get value for your money, the Kaya Butter Value Set (S$6.80, usual price S$8.60) comes with the Kaya Butter Pizza, a choice of local kopi or teh, and soft-boiled eggs.

As a Ya Kun kaya toast lover, I didn’t get the same crunchy satisfaction from their thick, chewy sourdough base (sorry, thin crust lovers).

And while it’s possible to polish off the 6-inch version by yourself, you might get a sugar rush from this particular flavour. 

Come lunchtime, check out the All Day Pizza range.

My favourite had to be the Carbonara (S$8.80 for 6-inch, S$11.80 for 10-inch). The egg’s runny, gooey goodness paired well with the creamy carbonara sauce and melted mozzarella.

Hot Honey Cheese (S$6.80 for 6-inch, S$9.80 for 10-inch) was certainly sweet, but as somebody with a poor spice tolerance, I was actually let down by the complete lack of spice.

It’s also a rather plain pizza with no toppings.

Aside from these, there’s Beef Bolognese, Mozza B.L.T., and more flavours to explore.

To complete your meal, a pro tip is to dip your pizza into the creamy Mushroom Soup (S$3.80) to help wash it down.

Or end on a sweet note with rumeL’s Strawberry Panna Cotta (S$3.80), which is on the creamier side while remaining jiggly to the touch. Texture-wise, it was silky smooth, with a velvety mouthfeel.

Another way rumeL stands out is their artisanal coffee beverages, brewed from beans roasted by Harry Ko, the De’Longhi Australian Brewers Cup Champion of 2022. 

My personal favourite is the signature Salted Caramel (Regular: S$5, Large: S$6) for its smooth and well-balanced blend of salty-sweet caramel and coffee. 

The other signature, the Brulee Brew (Regular: S$5, Large: S$6), has a stronger punch of coffee flavour.

At New Bahru, newcomer TopTable smashes its way onto the scene as Southeast Asia’s largest table tennis-themed cafe and bar, as well as Singapore’s first table tennis social club.

To celebrate TopTable’s opening, get 20% off ala carte items for the whole of June.

TopTable is extremely spacious. You’ll be greeted with mostly tables to your left and at the end, and a bar and table tennis tables to your right.

While table tennis is the star, two dart boards with scoreboard screens are provided too, and staff will set up a game of beer pong if you’re up for more.

Before playing, we fueled up on TopTable’s menu.

We ordered three of their recommended pizzas, the Prosciutto (S$30), Brussels Sprouts (S$26), and Prawn (S$30).

We found these flavours leaning on the sweeter side, but my favourite had to be the Prawn Pizza. This was incredibly saucy and the cheesiest of the three. 

The brussels sprouts added texture with their crunchiness, and you can drizzle on chilli oil to give a fiery kick. 

Meanwhile, Prosciutto was topped with arugula, which added a fresh touch as the prosciutto alone would have been a tad salty. 

Pair these mains with the Bites, of which we have to spotlight the Spiced Squid and TT Fries. 

The Spiced Squid (S$17) comes with Chipotle mayo that spices things up. But even without the sauce, the squid was well-seasoned, with a nice crunchy batter while being tender on the inside.

TT Fries (S$15) (or TableTop Fries) are a Chef’s Special, and for good reason. These were drizzled with torched Kewpie mayo, prosciutto crisp, and parmesan, providing a balance between creaminess and saltiness.

Of the extensive alcohol options, try the TopSpin Colada (S$18), Love All Lychee (S$19), and Espresso Rally (S$21). 

The non-alcoholic drinks are worth a shot as well, including Mocktails, Shakes & Floats, Matcha, Coffee, and more.

One standout is the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte (S$10). Here, you’ll be given a bowl of matcha to pour and mix in your glass. 

The results are worth the effort, as this was smooth, with a robustness from the matcha and the strawberry flavour coming through nicely. 

If the food and games sound like a match made in heaven, then you can book TopTable’s various packages fit for parties and team-building sessions.

But if you’re here just for table tennis, you can sign up for the classes. The Private Class (S$150 per lesson) comes with a 60-minute coaching session, while the Table Tennis Masterclass (S$90 per pax) is better suited for groups.

Do note that the Table Tennis Masterclass is an open group, two-hour-long class, with a maximum group size of 10 people.

Or for just a casual gathering, choose between Play & Sip for games and alcohol, Pong, Beer Pong, Darts for games only, and Group Packages for smaller groups.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you, while you’ll become a whizz at navigating the Wild, Wild West with this list, your wallet might come out a little lighter.

This is our round-up of 10 cafes, food spots, and dessert shops around Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

The Signature Patisserie

Muffin compares to a freshly-baked treat to warm your soul after a long lecture. 

All you have to do is let your nose follow the waft of handcrafted muffins to the cosy, woody storefront of The Signature Patisserie.

You can either box the muffins up and take them home, or sit down to savour them slowly. The assortment of flavours includes Durian Cream Cheese (S$4.60), Matcha Red Bean (S$4), and Oreo Nutella (S$4).

The muffins won’t be the only delights you’ll wipe clean of crumbs. Tuck into brunch items such as Har Cheong Gai Waffles (S$22), TSP French Toast (S$19), and The Breakfast Burger (S$20).

Or maybe noodle over the lineup of pastas available, including Creamy Tomyum Seafood (S$21), Mushroom & Spinach Carbonara (S$18), and Upton’s Favourite Pasta (S$18), named after one of the cafe’s own customers. 

To tie a pretty bow on this present of a meal, treat yourself to their desserts such as the Pandan Gula Melaka Butter Cake (S$7), Chocolate Fudge Cake (S$12), and more.

Along the same row of shops is The Signature Patisserie’s next-door neighbour, Carpenter & Cook, another homely cafe serving brunch with a wider range of pastries, tarts, and brews.

Sip on a range of drinks, including a Merry Trio Latte (S$9), a sweet blend of caramel, vanilla, and hazelnut and an Iced Oat Pumpkin Spice Latte (S$8) (who says pumpkin spice is exclusive to fall?).

Non-coffee options are available too, including teas, cocoa, frappes, smoothies, coolers, and more.

The savoury options are extensive, with fancy pastas like Al Granchio (S$29) and Pork Ragout (S$29), and brunch bites like Babaganoush Toast (S$23).

Any of their desserts will hit the sweet spots. These range from tarts like Banoffee (S$4.50) to Shine Muscat Shortcake (S$10.50).

W39 Bistro & Bakery

For pawrents, most of the time, going out for a meal means leaving your furkids at home.

W39 Bistro & Bakery changes that. In fact, your furbabies are more than welcome to dine with you through their pet-friendly menu.

The brunch menu boasts variety, including Croissant-wiches (S$14 to S$20), Shakshuka & Garlic Toast (S$15), and even local favourites such as Chef’s Special Nyonya Mee Siam (S$14).

And if you’re looking for something value for money, the set lunch (S$18) comes in clutch. Start by choosing between Smoked Salmon Spread Baguette, the Soup-of-the-Day, or W39 Hummus w Multigrain Crouton.

As for mains, there’s the Linguine with Baby Clams, Crispy Chicken Rice Bowl, and more. 

End on a high note with drinks and desserts, including an Assorted Mini Cake (random flavour) or 1 Scoop of Ice Cream.

Hundred Acre Creamery

The next time you’re rumbly in your tumbly for something sweet, check out Hundred Acre Creamery, a Winnie the Pooh-themed gelato shop on Sunset Way.

Enter the store with its cheery yellow palette plastered with Winnie the Pooh quotes, and be charmed by their offerings that are as sweet as honey.

Surprise your tastebuds with their unique gelato flavours (S$4.50 for single scoop, S$8.50 for double). These include Soursop Mint, Lilac Taro, Thai Tea Lychee, and Ispahan.

Hundred Acre Creamery also brings the bold flavours of Vietnamese Coffee to their drinks menu. You can even find Coco Affagato (S$8), where black Vietnamese coffee is poured over coconut sorbet.

The Living Cafe

You might think eating healthy means “rabbit food” or some kind of sad heap of greens, but The Living Cafe aims to challenge that.

This healthy and raw food cafe bursts with flavours whilst being bereft of red meat, preservatives, additives, and more.

On the menu is All-Day Brunch, including a Superfood Smoothie Bowl (S$18), 6th Avenue Rosti (S$24), and Mediterranean Omelette (S$24). 

Be bowled over by their bowls aplenty, including Vietnamese Chicken Salad (S$24), Coconut Curry Dahl (S$19), and Zucchini Falafel Bowl (S$23).

And take comfort in their TLC favourites, such as the Spiced Chicken Burger (S$22), Honey Glazed Chicken Wrap (S$19), and Salmon Spinach Pizza (S$23).

FlagWhite

Another pet-friendly cafe to add to your list is FlagWhite. You’ll find Australian-inspired comfort food, all-day brunch, and coffee starting from S$3.50 for an Espresso to S$9 for Affogato, Flagwhite’s White Cold Brew, and more.

It’s not every day you can mix and match your brunch to your liking, any time of day.

Select from your choice of egg, flaggers, and bread to build your brunch. 

For Eggs, choose between Sunny Eggs (S$5), Scrambled (S$5), or Sous Vide (2 pieces) (S$5). The bread selection is just as short and sweet, with Sourdough (2 pieces) (S$4), Croissant (S$4), or Japanese Shokupan (S$4). 

Flaggers are where you can really go ham on piling your plate high with greens and meats like Sauteed Mushrooms (S$4.50), Diced Avocado (S$4.50), and Roasted Pumpkin (2 pieces) (S$4.50).

Mains are standard fare, but the desserts are worth checking out. Some eye-catching items include the Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake (S$8.50) and the Seashore Mousse Earl Grey Cheesecake (S$8.50).

Overscoop

Most gelato shops offer the usual waffles or cones, but Overscoop will have you over the moon with their customisations.

Waffles come in Plain (S$7), Dark Cocoa (add S$0.50), Pandan (add S$0.50), and the ever-popular Mochi (add S$1).

Other less common bases include croffle (S$7), brownie (S$6.50), and lava cake (S$6.50).

Afterwards, stack your plate high with gelato, ranging from a single (S$5) to a whopping quadruple (S$16) scoops. 

As the “cherry” on top, crown your gelato with a free overscoop (get it?), aka a mini scoop.

Over acai bowls (S$9.80) are available too. I totally understand if you’re not willing to share, so opt for a second bowl at 50% off.

Yeast Side, best side? It certainly is at KAP Mall, home to this cafe by day and craft beer joint by night.

If you take the bus to the stop opposite Ngee Ann Polytechnic, you’ve probably caught glimpses of its iconic yellow print on its glass storefront as you pass KAP Mall by.

As hinted in its name, what you knead to know is that the cafe rolls out sourdough pizzas and focaccia sandwiches.

You’ll be in for a toss-up between cheekily named pizzas such as Shroooms! (S$20), Foursome With Honey (S$21), and Hold My Salami (S$23).

Or sink into the sandwiches, including Smashed Beef (S$19), Mr Crabs (S$18), and SriLankan Chicken (S$16).

Any day is Acai Day; I don’t make the rules. With the recent closure of Acai Den in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, you’re probably on the hunt for other acai options in the area.

Not only do they have acai bowls, smoothies, and sorbets, but they are priced pretty affordably, so you’re getting bang for your buck.

Best of all, it’s open till midnight — the perfect pick-me-up after long school days.

Starting with the signature acai bowls, choose between customising your bowl from scratch or getting any of the classics such as Greek Goddess and Chia Me Up (S$6.70 for small, S$9.90 for medium, S$14.90 for large). 

Cool down with the sorbets, including #Man Goals, a clever mix of acai and mango sorbet, Choc-oat-late, and Coco Island (S$7.30 for small, S$10.50 for medium, S$15.50 for large).

Finally, smooth things over with the smoothies. For S$8.90, go wild over the Berry Bliss, Cacao Overload, and Lean & Green.

A meal for under S$10, in this economy?

Waffletown is one place that can proudly back this up with its range of wallet-friendly meals.

Making its triumphant return with its new outlet in Clementi, the eatery maintains its original, old-school charm.

The value meals are available for S$7.50, which includes the Super Curry Rice, the Super Value Meal, and the Super Value Meal Japan Vers.

The burgers are just as filling and decently priced, with the cheapest being the Chicken Burger at just S$3.80 a la carte. The price goes up to S$7.80 to make it a meal.
