1. Lemon Cake

Lemon Cake may remind you of Diner Dash, but this game is a lot less stressful and slower-paced. You work as a bakery owner who can repair and decorate their bakery with the help of a friendly ghost.

Farming and taking care of animals is important in gathering ingredients for baking. Of course, you will have your baking skills put to the test as you run around to serve your hungry customers during the lunch rush.

The bakery doubles as a cat cafe, and yes, you can pet the cats

It’s a fairly mindless game with some farming and crafting on the side, but seeing the satisfied looks on the cute capybaras will have you feeling as warm and comfortable as they are.

3. VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action

Some might be put-off by the anime-like aesthetic of VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action, but trust me, it is nothing like what you will expect.

Set in a dystopian world, you meet fascinating and unique characters with stories of their own as a bartender in a small bar called VA-11 HALL-A. Instead of traditional dialogue options, you influence the storyline through the choice of drinks you mix for them.

4. Unravel

Photo: Electronic Arts

Unravel is an underrated platformer game with an amazing soundtrack and environment. Released in 2016, this gem has you playing as Yarny, a lovable character made from a single thread of yarn that unravels as you embark on an adventure to reconnect long-lost family memories.

Don’t worry, Yarny doesn’t die from unravelling — this is about cosy games after all. Feel free to immerse yourself in the stunning environments of Northern Scandinavia as you swing around and solve puzzles with your yarn.

The soundtrack, inspired by Nordic folk style, brings a calming and unique flair to the game (it has been a staple in my study playlist since its release).

P.S. There’s a sequel named Unravel Two, offering both single-player and two-player modes, so you can enjoy the game on your own or with a friend.

5. Unpacking

You’ve probably seen at least one streamer playing this hit game. Unpacking is a therapeutic puzzle game that has you following the main character through different stages of their life, represented by each new home they move into.

By helping them unpack and organise their belongings, placing each item where it rightfully belongs, or seeing which items they choose to discard, you can gain insights into their life story.

A lot of care and detail has been put in by the developers to create a great visual story, so take your time to observe while unpacking.

Coral Island may still be in early access, but it definitely has enough content to keep you playing for months.

This game is a great mix of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, with an engaging storyline, interesting NPCs that you can romance and marry,  and not to mention — an underwater world!

You can dive and enter the Merfolk Kingdom, which is set to be released this August 2023. The developers have been optimising and rolling out more content to improve gameplay experience as well. Farming, decorating, and dating — what more can you ask for in a cosy game like this?

However, do take note that there are some bugs as the game is still in development.

7. A Short Hike

This game is a personal favourite! For good reasons as well, since A Short Hike is one of Steam’s top 20 rated games. True to its name, this game can be completed within a single afternoon, but it won’t fail to make you feel warm and fuzzy for the next few days.

You play as a young bird named Claire who needs to climb Hawk Peak Provincial Park’s highest peak for a phone signal to call her ailing mother. You can fly, climb and explore the island to find hidden treasures while playing all sorts of minigames with the islanders.

It’s the perfect package of an emotional story, wholesome interactions between characters, cute pixel graphics, and a magical soundtrack.

8. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion

The title has probably alerted you to the comedic nature of this game. You play as a mischievous turnip that is facing debt and eviction, who then commits tax evasion and various other criminal acts to take down the government.

It is similar to Zelda in terms of gameplay, with dungeons to explore and bosses to fight, as well as mini side quests along the way. There are multiple endings depending on your actions too.

You can look forward to terrorising more innocent civilians in the sequel, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank, which will be released in 2023.

9. Bread & Fred

Bread & Fred is a challenging co-op platformer where two players control two cute little penguins on a snowy mountain. The two penguins are bound by a rope, and each can hold onto walls, swing and climb.

You can try out the free demo before committing to the purchase. Online multiplayer has been added recently as well.

There is single-player mode available in the event that your partner becomes too frustrated with you to continue playing. Although Bread & Fred may not sound like it should belong in this list of cosy games, it can be really rewarding and satisfying once you and your partner have gotten the hang of it.

Hot tip: turn on ‘Checkpoints’ in the accessibility menu to save your relationship.

Honourable mention: Frog Detective series

Photo: Fanatical

It is an underrated short game series where you play as a Frog Detective and go about solving mysteries. The characters are hilarious, the mysteries are hilarious, and it is satirical, witty but heartwarming at the same time.

There are three games in the series, namely Frog Detective 1: The Haunted IslandFrog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard, and Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County. As each game tackles a different mystery, you can choose to not play all three and only pick one.

However, there are recurring characters and jokes throughout the series, so I do recommend playing all three in order if you want to fully appreciate the games. You can get all three games in the Frog Detective 1 + 2 + 3 bundle at S$15.75.
