Treat yourself to FOOK KIN good dim sum and roast meats like char siew, golden truffle roast duck & more at this celebrity-owned restaurant in town

For all you char siew connoisseurs out there, here’s a name you might be familiar with — Fook Kin by Roast Paradise, Fatboy’s, and Class 95 DJs The Muttons. Located a short walk away from Somerset MRT, the restaurant has established a name for itself as one of the best places to head to for upscale roast meats

As you head into the eatery, you’ll be greeted with a cheeky sign that expresses — well, just how much they appreciate your visit.

Naturally, we had to try the crowd favourite — the Fookkin’ Mix Platter (from S$35), which comes with both their char siew and roast pork belly. True enough, the char siew was tender and perfectly candied, with a good balance of meat and fat. It was of the sweeter variety, but that really worked in this case. Plus, the sauce on the side reminded me of those used for peking duck!

The roast pork belly was crispy, but it was a little on the lean side — personally, I would have preferred more fat in each slice.

Now, while patrons have also raved about dishes like Radish Fluffy Omelette (S$10.70) and Golden Lotus Roots Crisps (S$15.30), the purpose of our visit was to sample their newest menu items.

First, we had the Golden Truffle Roast Duck (S$33.20) — and yes, it was as decadent as it sounds. The first thing you’ll notice about the dish is the extra bougie gold dusting, which is bound to make you feel like royalty. I also loved that the truffle flavour wasn’t too overwhelming, and actually went surprisingly well with the herbal notes of the duck.

The duck itself wasn’t too gamey, and was tender and juicy — overall, I’d say this dish was a win!

As a big fan of dim sum, I definitely had to get a taste of Fook Kin’s newest dim sum offerings that are only available from 10am to 4pm daily. Think Shrimp & Chicken Siew Mai (S$4.80), Sharks Fin Dumplings (S$5.50), Steamed Pork Ribs with Black Bean (S$6.80), and more.

I really liked the Golden Vermicelli Prawn Roll (S$8.50), which came topped with an eye-catching pink dragon fruit sauce. It was crispy and the sweetness of the sauce complemented the saltiness of the dish perfectly — I just wished there was a little more of the prawn filling.

Just one look at the lava oozing out of this Sesame Creamy Custard Ball (S$ 6.20) tells you all you need to know — combined with the mochi-like texture of the sesame shell, this particular item makes for a particularly satisfying mouthfeel.

There are times that I find myself over-ordering, because I want to try everything on the menu — and end up not being able to finish all the food. If you can relate, you should defo opt for the Fook Kin Six Flavour Prawn (S$29.90), which comes in six different flavours ranging from salted egg, mala, wasabi, and even dragon fruit. Talk about bite-sized variety!

If you’re familiar with the famous Jay Fai restaurant’s crab omelette, be sure to order their Omelette Crab Bomb (S$26.80). The omelette was crisp, and was generously stuffed with crab meat — but to me, the star of the show was the sauce served on the side. It was sour with just a smidge of heat, which really elevated the entire dish.

Of course, you’ll need some drinks to go with your meal. Opt for Honey Lemon (S$4.60), Peach Soda (S$4.90), or even the Ice Tea with Lychee Sorbet (S$7.90), which was surprisingly refreshing.
