Formerly known as Restaurant Beurre, the restaurant oozes cosy and moody vibes, with warm yellow lighting and cushy seats.

It’s also conveniently located along Bukit Pasoh Road, home to some of Singapore’s best bars, so you and your date can easily pop by for a nightcap after dinner.

Beurre@23 doles out modern European dishes with an Asian flair, so you’ll recognise elements from French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Indian, and even Chinese cuisine peppered throughout the menu.

A little confusing, conceptually, but the quality of the food more than makes up for it.

Before you take your pick from the selection of starters, sides, small plates, and main courses, feel free to order wine and enjoy the complimentary bread and butter.

Naturally, you’d expect the canelé-shaped kombu butter served at a restaurant named after the French word for “butter” to be nothing short of excellent, with strong umami notes.

Interestingly enough, butter takes a backseat here; you’ll notice that it doesn’t feature prominently on the menu. As such, you won’t encounter “brown butter” or even “beurre blanc“, the classic French butter sauce.

Moving on to starters, although many tend to go for the Chilli Crab Mantou (S$11), we were recommended the Tuna Cone (S$15).

Exquisite presentation aside, the miniature cones, which tasted a lot like the regular waffle cones used for ice cream, were a tad too sweet. The tuna tartare and ikura were struggling to make their presence known, and hence the dish was not as well-balanced as I would’ve liked.

Fortunately, the small plates fared so, so much better. I can never say no to a Burrata Salad (S$29), and this rendition, composed of watermelon gazpacho, sake-infused rockmelon, tomatoes, parma ham, ice plant, and of course, a mound of creamy burrata, was delightful.

The Escargot (S$23), which my dining partner thoroughly enjoyed, comprised escargot, leeks, and chunks of lardoon (pork fat) in a rich tongue-numbing mala sauce on a bed of aligot, or cheesy mashed potatoes AKA the most “French” element on the plate.

Very fusion, given how it was also finished off with crispy papadom.

Here’s the one side dish you must order, the Patatas Bravas (S$14).

Beurre@23’s refined take on the Spanish tapa features potatoes that have been painstakingly hand-cut, layered, and deep-fried till golden brown, piped with a tangy tomato-based sauce and creamy aioli.

Each slice had a crisp crust, with soft and fluffy insides, and was almost too easy to eat.

As for the main course, we opted for the prized Black Cod (S$56), a perfectly cooked piece of cod with pickled onion, seaweed butter sauce, and enoki blooms, or deep-fried enoki mushroom.

The rich softness of the flaky cod was swoon-worthy, and it helps that the entire dish was also wonderfully buttery — finally!

Lastly, we tucked into a dessert of Chocolate Fondant (S$14) with pistachio ice cream. The cake itself was rich, dark, and decadent, but it unfortunately wasn’t oozy in the middle.

While it may be hard to properly define the type of food served at Beurre@23, there were indeed more hits than misses, with quite a number of well-executed dishes I’d highly recommend.
