If you’ve got a very specific craving for warabimochi, a visit to Spuds & Soda, a former home-based business with a physical store in Beauty World, will be more than delightful.

Given that the business is still largely online-based, the cosy shop space along Jalan Jurong Kechil caters mainly to takeaway customers. However, there are a few tables available for those who wish to dine in and enjoy their warabimochi on the spot.

Step in and you’ll be greeted with a colourful display of warabimochi and dango, alongside a selection of cold brew teas and oat lattes in flavours like Houjicha, and Genmaicha.

Unlike mochi made from glutinous rice (the kind used to make daifuku), warabimochi is a Japanese confectionary traditionally made using ‘warabi‘ or bracken starch. It boasts a delicate, jelly-like texture that makes for a stretchy, chewy bite adored by mochi-lovers.

First-timers itching for a taste of Spuds & Soda’s warabimochi should give the traditional tea-inspired flavours like Kinako Kokuto, Matcha, Black Sesame, and Houjicha, a try. They’re best enjoyed in the Nihon Classics Mix (from S$6.80 for 8pc), a mainstay on the menu.

Other fun flavours include Yuzu, Grape Aloe, Kopi-O, and Passionfruit, but you can also keep a lookout for limited-edition or seasonal specials. For instance, a “Childhood Faves” series was released in early-2022, showcasing classic beverages like Ribena and Honey Lemon.

Another fun (and slightly firmer) type of mochi snack to nibble on is the warabi dango, or the chewy “QQ” mochi balls on a stick you see in Japanese animes.

Choose from the Nihon Classics Dango (S$7.20) or the Fruity Fanatics Dango (S$6.90); the latter comprises fruity flavours like Blueberry, Mango, Peach, and Lychee.
