With the entrance of Yo-Chi and Yoajung, we are truly blessed that The Acai Teahouse has joined the soft-serve craze, because its soft-serve bowls don’t go by weight, but by size.

To introduce the swirly goodness to our dear readers, my colleague and I ventured to The Central at Clarke Quay to get first dibs on the opening of this acai teahouse.

You will find that the store is extremely cosy when you enter. Simply order from the kiosk and choose between the Acai Soft-Serve and Matcha Soft-Serve. 

There are three sizes at this acai house — Petite, Standard, and Large. The small size goes at S$8.90, regular goes at S$11.50, and large at S$14.50.

Struggling to choose one flavour? Get the Acai and Matcha mix. I personally opted for that to get a taste of both flavours — all at one price! So if you’re one to enjoy getting a bang for your buck, definitely get this option.

You’ll receive your soft-serve after you make your payment. Then, proceed to the island of toppings where you’ll be greeted with assorted fruits like oranges, white and pink dragonfruits, grapes, kiwi, and more. If fruits ain’t your thing, get the strawberry jellies, brown sugar boba, lychee boba, or nata de coco.

What’s acai without some granola? The Acai Teahouse also offers granola, honey roasted cornflakes, honey almonds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds. If all these goodness are still lacking, they also offer goji berries, raisins, dark and white chocolate nibs!

Top all of these with any of the six sauces — Pistachio, Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Biscoff, Passionfruit, and Matcha.

The best thing of all is that toppings are unlimited! Now you don’t have to be restricted as compared to when you visit other soft-serve chains. Hehe, if you know you know.

Aside from their soft-serve, The Acai Teahouse also has an extensive menu of Matcha Lattes — from Uji Matcha Latte (S$7.50 for hot, and S$7.90 for iced), Acai Matcha Latte (S$9.50), to Mango Matcha Ocean Latte (S$8.90).

The Acai Teahouse would obviously not be called a teahouse if teas weren’t served. Get their Brewed Sencha (S$5.90), Brewed Hojicha (S$5.90), Osmanthus Oolong Tea (S$5.90).

Let’s start with Pinky Promise (S$14.90), a loaded creamy mentaiko pasta, with shredded salmon and little pops of Tobiko that danced in my mouth. At first glance, I was pleasantly surprised at the serving size and the generous portions of salmon.

Presentation and taste-wise, I believe it would be way better if the egg yolk stood out more against the watery egg whites to add onto the thickness of the mentaiko, and the aesthetics of the pasta.

My only complaint for this loaded bowl would be the lack of clinginess of the sauce to the pasta. I would honestly expect them to be gelled together like an actual pinky promise, finished up with a “chop”. Ah, brings me back to when I was a child, when promises actually meant something…

DIY Pasta Option

If you’re someone who lives to DIY, you’ll be happy to hear that you can customise your very own bowl of pasta! Choose between six different sauces — Aglio Olio (S$6.90), Tomato (S$7.90), Cream Sauce (S$8.90), Pesto Sauce (S$9.90), and more.

Pasta options include Pappardelle Ricce — choose from the egg, beetroot, and mushroom options, and Spaghetti — egg, or squid ink options, and finally the Rigatoni — egg, squid ink, or eggless option.

If you think that’s a lot of pasta options, the choices of add-ons will wow you even more. Select your proteins, from Chicken Breast (S$3.50), Smoked Duck (S$3.50), Large Prawns (S$4.50), Scallops (S$4), and Salmon (S$4). You can also add on Tobiko for S$2, Roasted Tomatoes for S$1.50, and Truffle Oil for S$1.50 if you’re feeling extra boujee.

We chose the Aglio Olio option and the Pappardelle Ricce mushroom pasta, with Chicken Breast, Poached Egg (S$1.50), Broccoli, and Mushrooms (S$2).

I had mixed feelings about this combination. While the pasta’s texture was bouncy and firm, the Aglio Olio sauce tasted like it forgot to RSVP to the flavour party. It wasn’t like it was bad or anything, it just seemed like it was extremely shy to befriend Mr Garlic and Ms Chili Pepper at the flavour party.

We also assembled sides and a drink at S$4.90 for our Build-Your-Own-Pasta mission. The Tater Tots were delightfully crunchy, and light on the palate. As usual, this alternative version of fries is like your dependable friend of a decade — they don’t always make the loudest of appearances, but they’re always there, and guaranteed to be trustworthy.

For the readers who have read my article on Bacino Italian Bistro, you’d know that their Burrata knocked me out of the living realm for a few milliseconds. Since then, I have been in search of solid Burrata. I was elated to find it at Tangled, and with the affordable price of S$15.90, there was no reason to say no to the Burrata with Toast.

This burrata is served with toast on the side, surrounded by roasted tomatoes, fried beans, pesto and ponzu. Perhaps it is because in our line of work, the camera always eats first, so by the time we could taste the cheese, it was already far too curdy. Overall, it was a bold mix of flavours that didn’t exactly work for me. But who knows? It might work for you.

Nestled within one of Singapore’s most iconic century-old heritage buildings, the beautifully restored Temasek Shophouse, Bibik Violet pays tribute to Peranakan cuisines by offering comforting flavours, nostalgic bakes, and traditional Nonya Kueh.

The atmosphere is intentionally made to give off a genial and comforting vibe, as if you’re stepping into a close aunt’s home. The dishes offered at Bibik Violet are reminiscent of the everyday meals you might enjoy and look forward to, on your grandma’s table. 

You can look forward to an all-day dining experience, from exclusive breakfast offerings to hearty dishes best enjoyed with rice, and a wide selection of Nonya Kuehs and traditional bakes.

Some of the dishes I look forward to trying most includes the Nasi Lemak with Ayam Berempah (S$14.90), Buah Keluak Soft Rib (S$19.50), Ngo Hiang (S$9), and Kueh Pie Tee (S$8.50).

Let’s start off with the Nasi Lemak with Ayam Berempah. 

I’ve not had many encounters with this dish; in fact, I might not have even tried it in my lifetime. At first sight, this crispy fried chicken, marinated in aromatic herbs and spices, served with fragrant coconut rice, sambal, crispy anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, and egg caught my attention. 

Not sure if it’s just a me thing, but as my age increases, I find myself becoming more receptive to aromatic foods. While it is not something I typically lean towards, this is definitely something I want to try when I visit.

A few months ago, the sequel of one of Singapore’s greatest television hits, The Little Nonya, titled Emerald Hill – The Little Nonya Story, took my family by storm. From my 68-year-old grandma to my 10-year-old sister, none of us could escape the clutches of the series. There, the Buah Keluak was mentioned countless times, making it a dish that I am insatiably curious about. 

I was pleasantly surprised to see the dish on Bibik Violet’s menu, because this means that I can finally have a taste of this arcane dish.

The next few dishes I’ll definitely order are the Ngo Hiang and Kueh Pie Tee. As an avid fan of Ngo Hiang, it is something I find difficult not to order when I see it. The look of the deep-fried five-spice pork and prawn rolls wrapped in beancurd skin, served with sweet sauce, is simply irresistible.

As someone who likes cute things, this crisp shell with shredded turnip, carrot, tofu, and bamboo shoots, topped with egg, chill and sweet sauce. Personally I think four pieces for S$8.50 is a bit too pricey for me.

I’m a huge fan of pickled vegetables, so I would certainly add on the Achar at S$4 to wash down any potential greasiness, not from Bibik Violet’s dishes, but from overeating all this goodness.
