Opened by the folks behind Onggi and Sotpot is Sotbox, a Korean street food kiosk specialising in kimbap with a creative twist.

All three concepts are conveniently housed in Suntec City, so you’ll be able to get your fix of Korean gomtang, sotbap (pot rice) and kimbap all in one place.

Although there is very limited seating (no tables), the shop mainly operates as a takeaway joint, so you’re better off getting your food to go.

Even then, you might find yourself feeling spoilt for choice, given the exciting array of kimbap options available.

For something different, consider trying the Chungmu Kimbap (S$11.90), a Busan specialty that’s made with just rice, paired with an excellent squid and radish kimchi that was fresh, tangy, and frankly speaking, very authentic-tasting.

Fans of inari sushi will also probably enjoy the Yububap (from S$2.50) — rice and toppings encased in sweet dried tofu skin.

As for the “regular” kimbap we’re all too familiar with, flavours range from the original Classy Classic (S$8.90), loaded with eggs, carrots, cucumber, radish, and ham, to fun options like Nutty Cream Cheese (S$12.90) and Porky-Bulgo Go Go (S$10.90).

If you, like me, stray away from eating large portions of rice, go for the Kkoma (from S$1.90), mini rice rolls with fillings like tuna mayo, ham and cheese, fried kimchi, and even cream cheese with walnuts.

Aside from being wallet-friendly, I liked how much more compact the ingredients were. You could also order several flavours of kkoma to try if it’s a full meal you’re after.

Alternatively, go for the keto-friendly kimbap (from S$11.90), which subsitutes rice with shredded egg.

Regardless of which kimbap you opt for, pair it with your preferred sauce, of which there are four to choose from.

Don’t be deceived by the K-Mustard Signature (S$1), which unexpectedly packed a ton of pungent heat. Similarly, the Honey Mustard (S$1) that you might just mistake for lemon curd, was way too sweet for my liking.

Instead, you’re better off sticking to the classics: Sesame-Soy Sauce (S$1) and Cream Mayo (S$1).

As for Gansik (sides), Sotbox sells Fried Mandoo (S$5.90), Chicken Gangjeong (S$7.90), and interestingly enough, Fried Eomuk (S$2.90), or fried fishcake strips. They were equal parts crispy and chewy, especially when eaten fresh out of the fryer, and proved really addictive.

Seriously, I could not stop.

Last but not least, you’re encouraged to wash everything down with a cup of clear Pork (S$2.40) or Beef Gomtang (S$2.90) from Onggii. We’d recommend the latter, as not only was it clean-tasting and incredibly comforting, but it possessed a complex depth of flavour the pork version lacked.

To make things more value-for-money, go for one of the set meals. For instance, the Kkoma Kimbap Set Meal (S$11.50) gets you a portion of kimbap, alongside fried eomuk, sauce, and your choice of gomtang.

Unsurprisingly, they’ve also launched a speciality kimbap stall called Futoru that has been making waves all over social media.

Although there are a number of eateries specialising in the fuss-free lunch staple, Futoru, which is situated in the food hall, stands out with its selection of trendy high-protein, low-carb kimbap (also referred to as gimbop, or K-style sushi rolls).

Aesthetic packaging aside, the kimbap come in fun flavours like the bestselling Salmon Gimbop (S$18.90), which unlike most kimbap offerings, contain fresh raw salmon. There aren’t many traditional flavours here; even the classic Tuna (S$12.90) and Hotdog (S$14.90) gimbop have wasabi mayonnaise and sriracha sauce respectively.

You can also find an unconventional Soda Gimbop (S$12.90), which is rolled with soba noodles and soba sauce (instead of rice), as well as a Salad Gimbop (S$12.90), comprising chicken breast, crab meat, and fresh vegetables with a truffle sauce. Fancy!

Those who are looking to cut down on carbs can go for the selection of keto-friendly kimbap, with options like the Salmon Green Keto (S$19.90), Salad Green Chicken Keto (S$14.90), and Tuna Green Keto (S$14.90), all of which are bulked up with salad greens and not rice.

Kimbap not filling enough? Make it more of a feast with street eats like Cheese Tteokbokki (S$9.90), Cream Pasta (S$16.90), or even K-Chicken, Korean fried chicken in flavours like Soy Sauce (S$16.90) and Sweet & Spicy (S$18.90).

Bulk orders are also available, so it’s your call if you want to treat your friends or colleagues to a kimbap feast (I’d be most grateful if I were them)!

Those residing in the North no longer need to travel to GR.iD for their fix of Muslim-friendly street food, as Korean-born Muslim revert Chef Jung has done it again.

His latest concept, Sangwoo Street, has finally opened at Kedai Kopi in Yishun, dishing out authentic Korean eats prepared using halal ingredients at relatively affordable prices.

I’m happy to see that the Tteokbokki (S$5), perfectly chewy rice cakes bathed in a well-balanced sweet and spicy sauce, take center stage here. I remember falling head over heels for it when I first tried it at Meokja, so in other words, they are a must-order.

Pair your tteokbokki with a selection of kimbap like the tuna-based Chamchi (S$6.50), fried shrimp-stuffed Saewoo (S$7), and the classic Bulgogi (S$7). We can be friends if you also enjoy dipping your kimbap into tteokbokki sauce — it’s a pairing that always, always hits the spot.

Kimbap is also exclusive to this Yishun outlet, so you bet I’ll be getting my hands on some soon!

Those looking for extra comfort can order the hearty Sangwoo Stew (S$7.50) and Twigim (S$7), a popular deep-fried street snack that’s kinda like Korean tempura.

Although the menu here isn’t as extensive as that of Meokja’s, you can look forward to more street eats being rolled out in weeks to come.

So, the next time those kimbap and tteokbokki cravings surface and you happen to be in Yishun, you know where to go!

Located at Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, Ssada Gimbab is the newest Korean eatery to join Beauty World’s own mini Korea. Before you get confused, this Ssada Gimbab outlet is not related to the popular Ssada Gimbab chain in Korea. The menu offerings are also vastly different from its Korean counterpart, but, while these two outlets are not related, the food here is still worth a try. 

On the menu are your classic kimbap offerings like Tuna (S$9), Kimchi, Shrimp, and Beef with prices starting from S$9. Mala lovers rejoice as Ssada Gimbab has a mala kimbap — a pretty unique offering at a Korean eatery. There’s also a Nude Gimbab (S$9) which is an inverted version of the original gimbab — kinda like a maki roll. Each gimbab is meticulously made on the spot by a Korean ahjumma with generous portions of rice, veggies and meat. 

Interestingly, the Mala Gimbab (S$11) is one of the best sellers so naturally I had to give it a go. The gimbab comes stuffed with mala pork, radish, cucumber, carrots and rice. On your first bite, you’ll get the fragrance of the mala spices as well as a slight numbing sensation. As with all things mala, the more bites you take, the more the spice hits. 

Thankfully, the crunch from the cucumber and radish helps to alleviate the spice. However, I feel that the ingredients could have been more tightly packed together. 

For those who have a low spice tolerance, the Tonkutsu Gimbab (S$11) might be right up your alley. The roll comes chock full of ingredients, including a hearty well-battered pork cutlet. The savoury crunch from the tonkatsu contrasted well with the sauce while the fresh veggies helped to cut the grease so that you don’t feel too jelak eating it. Pair it with some kimchi for added spice and tang. 

The menu also features several quintessential Korean snacks like Rabokki (S$13), Tteokbokki (S$12), and Chapaghetti (S$8). If you love cheese, you should get the Cheese Tteokbokki (S$14) which is your regular chewy Korean rice cakes drenched in a spicy-sweet sauce and loaded with cheese — the perfect blend of sweet, savoury, and spicy all in one mouthful. 

Apart from hearty gimbab, they also have soothing hot stone stew like Soft Tofu Stew (S$13) and Soybean Paste Stew (S$13). I absolutely fell in love with the soybean paste stew. It was rich, spicy, flavourful, and loaded with ingredients like mushrooms, zucchini and tofu. 

If you live or work around Bukit Timah Shopping Centre or are around the area looking for a quick lunch fix, Ssada Gimbab has got your back. Do note that if you’re planning to pick up something for lunch, the shop takes a break from 3pm to 5pm, so keep that in mind!
