But honestly, nothing hits quite like a good savoury Korean barbecue (K-BBQ) after a long day at work. 

We used to be loyal regulars at Wong Dae Bak, mainly because it’s conveniently wedged between Telok Ayer and Tanjong Pagar. However, it’s still a long way to payday, and our wallets are feeling a little tight. 

So we decided to hunt for something more affordable — and that’s how we stumbled upon a hidden gem called Gogi Buffet Korean KBBQ. 

Snug at the far end of Tanjong Pagar Road, nearer to Maxwell MRT station, Gogi Buffet Korean KBBQ is such an unassuming spot that you might have walked past unknowingly. Unlike its competitors, Gogi Buffet Korean BBQ doesn’t have any long queues snaking outside the store or flashy signs. 

Another thing that makes Gogi stand out from the other K BBQ spots is the interior of the shop. While its competitors go all out to recreate Seoul’s street-side theme, Gogi keeps things minimal. 

Made out of just white walls, wooden tables and brightly coloured chairs, with just the humble-looking sign that says ‘Gogi Korean Buffet’. The atmosphere reminds us of visiting our grandparents’ house during the holidays — warm, cosy, and filled with good food and company. 

Next, the buffet spread is massive, spoiling us with over 50 free-flow items to choose from, such as Bulgogi Beef, Barbecue Chicken, Pork Belly, Enoki Mushrooms, Seafood, and many more. 

There’s even a corner dedicated to your favourite Korean side dishes, such as Pa-Jeon (Korean-style Chives Pancake), Kimchi Stew, Japchae, and many more. 

We really liked how the food was set up, as it reminded us of home birthday parties we used to have when we were kids, surrounded by family and endless food filled with love. 

Are you scared of the sizzling and splashes of hot oil? Unfortunately, the cooking is totally done by customers, for customers. Each table has a metal grill plate in the centre, so you and your friends can take turns showing off your barbecue skills. 

Upon trying the grilled beef, we were won over by the overwhelming umami and the texture of the meat. Its tenderness and juiciness of the meat kept us on our toes throughout the night. 

Even the crunchy grilled vegetables were paired well with the comforting sides that we couldn’t stop eating more of. 

Of course, no K-BBQ buffet session is complete without alcoholic drinks, right? Gogi’s got you covered with an assortment of Korean alcohol, such as Makgeolli, Soju, and more. 

Before you get excited to drink through the night, do take note that the alcoholic drinks are not part of the buffet set. And if you’re on a no-alcohol streak, not to worry, as there’s also free-flow water provided for customers to stay hydrated throughout their feast.

Overall, we were instantly comfortable in Gogi, as its nostalgia and homeliness were personified in an experience, striking a chord in our hearts. 

If you and your colleagues are working around Tanjong Pagar or near Maxwell MRT station, you’re in luck — Gogi offers an unlimited buffet on weekdays and weeknights at just S$24.99 for both lunch and dinner sessions. 

The lunch session starts from 12pm to 2.30pm, while the dinner session begins at 5pm and ends at 11pm.

For our friends who are looking for a date spot this weekend, you can head down and enjoy their lunch and dinner buffets at just S$26.99 per pax from 12pm to 11pm. 

Other than Tanjong Pagar, Gogi has another outlet in Upper Thomson that you can check out with your family and friends, too.

Koggii, situated at Suntec City, serves Singapore’s first ever Korean ‘cai fan’, where you can pick and choose your favourite Korean dishes on a cafeteria-style lunch tray.

While this concept is only available for lunch during the weekdays, from 11.30am to 3.30pm, that’s hardly an issue as it’s clearly tailored for the office crowd.

Prices start with a base fee ranging from S$11.90 to S$13.90, depending on the dishes available that day. While you’re limited to a one-time selection of mains or seafood dishes, the side dishes are free-flow — so feel free to indulge to your heart’s content!

Some of their side dishes include kimchi (of course), gimbap, and pancake. All classic Korean food to complement your bowl of white rice.

Wondering what’s on the menu outside of the weekday ‘cai fan’ hours? On weekday dinners and all day on weekends, that will be their free-flow Korean BBQ, which is priced at just S$39.90 per person.

There’s your usual variety of meats like beef, pork, and chicken for you to grill over charcoal. However, what’s truly interesting is how fusion dishes like pasta and pizzas are served as well.

So, whether you’re craving a budget-friendly ‘cai fan’ feast or ready to go all out with a sizzling Korean BBQ spread, this spot has you covered.

The only gripe that I have (which some of you may be able to relate to) is that the bill can very easily rack up and my wallet ends up paying the price for it later (literally). So that may be why so many of us choose to go to Johor Bahru instead because everything is priced at a third of its usual prices. 

Well, if you are in the mood to feast to your heart’s content, here are six affordable Korean BBQ spots in Johor Bahru with all-you-can-eat meats, unlimited sides, free-flow noodles and more from just S$10.

1. Sae Ma Eul BBQ

Nothing says affordable more than Sae Ma Eul BBQ’s Charcoal BBQ Buffet priced at just S$10.97++ (RM38.20) per adult and S$7.80++ (RM27.30) per kid for 100 minutes for a minimum of two diners. Think all-you-can-eat meats, including spicy chicken ribs, marinated pork ribs, spicy pork belly, pork belly, and pork shoulder.

Even better, they have a self-service banchan bar so you can help yourself to as much kimchi as you want. Just be mindful of the food wastage and try not to order more than what you can eat! 

As I always say, no meal is complete without desserts — go for the Bingsu (S$2.29, RM8) in an assortment of flavours like green tea, mango, black sesame and more. Although it is 25 minutes away from the checkpoint, this is definitely too good of a deal to miss out on.

2. Itaewon Korean BBQ Buffet

Alternatively, Itaewon Korean BBQ Buffet is another spot to consider, located just 30 minutes away from the checkpoint. 

Hit them up for lunch as the Korean Charcoal BBQ is only S$10.05++ (RM35) per adult and S$8.04++ (RM28) per child for 100 minutes. Those who are planning to come in the evening (after 4pm) may choose to opt for the dinner set for S$10.92++ (RM38) per adult and S$8.90++ (RM31) per kid. 

But, do take note that this is only available for a minimum of two diners so a couple’s date, perhaps? 

This buffet comes with unlimited refills of marinated and spicy pork cuts alongside grilled soy sauce chicken ribs — perfect for meat lovers. 

Not to mention, there is a self-service bar and each diner is entitled to a marshmallow skewer for a toasty treat.

3. Zen Plus Korean BBQ

If you’re someone who prefers variety, Zen Plus Korean BBQ is the place to go in Johor Bahru because they offer the Unlimited Han Sang at just S$11.20++ (RM39) per adult and S$8.04++ (RM28) per kid for 90 minutes. 

Besides getting free-flow meats like pork belly, chicken ribs and more, you can supplement it with carbs like kimchi stew, Korean rice ball, tteokbokki, pizza, and all-you-can-eat ramen.

Have you ever heard of  gorgonzola (cheese) pizza dipped in honey as part of a KBBQ set?  

Well, I haven’t, but I can see how it would help to cut down the greasiness after feasting on all those meats. Considering its sweet and savoury profile, it would be popular amongst the kids or those with a sweet tooth. 

Nonetheless, it’s definitely a hearty meal to treat yourself with.

Unlike the previous spots, this palsaik set comes with pork belly in eight different marinades. Think ginseng, wine, pine, garlic, herb, curry, soybean, and hot pepper for you to embark on a gastronomic adventure. 

To complete your KBBQ experience, the set also comes with a comforting bowl of jjigae (stew) of your choice including soybean paste, spicy seafood or kimchi pork.

They have a set for two pax at just S$34.46 (RM120) serving samgyeopsal (pork belly), a stew of your choice (pork kimchi, red pepper paste or soybean paste), and a steamed egg with flying fish roe. 

Just looking at the juicy and succulent pieces of pork belly bursting with flavour has my mouth watering.

Look past the casual and no-frills food court-style seating, and head straight for the one thing Teng Sheng is most popular for — a Korean BBQ buffet that absolutely won’t break the bank.

The all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ buffet at priced at just S$18 per person during lunch on weekdays (Monday to Friday). Otherwise, you only need to pay S$22 per person for weekday dinners and weekends (all-day). Kids below 1.4m get to join in the fun for just S$10.

The buffet, which boasts an wide variety of ingredients, is largely self-service, so make a beeline for the marinated and non-marinated meats, including the likes of spicy chicken, pork belly, and beef ribs.

Nestled along Sembawang Road, the casual and homely family-style neighbourhood restaurant is perhaps best known for its extremely value-for-money BBQ buffet, despite offering a regular a la carte menu.

Drop by during lunch on weekdays (Monday to Friday) for unlimited Korean BBQ and Korean fried chicken at just S$15.90+ per person.

Prices for dinner (S$19.90+) and lunch on weekends (S$17.90+) are still very affordable — you’re essentially paying less than S$20 (before service charge — there is no GST) per head.
