Named after the Indonesian term for “honey”, MADU the Bakery was opened by young Medan-born home baker Jocelyn, best known for her bestselling Korean-style brioche buns. The home-based business was eventually expanded to a brick-and-mortar store, in partnership with the folks behind the popular Ah Hua Kelong and Scaled by Ah Hua Kelong.

Located just a five-minute walk from Exit B of Farrer Park MRT station, the IG-worthy cafe is certainly a sight for sore eyes. I’d best describe the space as “minimal and Balinese-inspired with Bohemian vibes” — the rustic wooden furnishings, rattan accents, and beige walls make for an idyllic, slow-paced afternoon.

The display houses seasonal baked goods like the Strawberry Danish (S$5.80), as well as the Japanese-inspired Azuki Butter (S$3), and Shio Pan (S$2), which rotate on a regular basis.

Signature bakes

You can’t visit without ordering their signature buns. The Classic Garlic (S$5.50), otherwise known as the perfect ‘Katsu Garlic Bun’, is the bakery’s take on the trendy Korean garlic cheese buns, while the Umami Mushroom (S$6) and Mentaiko (S$6.50) are stuffed with sautéed mushrooms and mentaiko cream respectively.

Everyone seems to rave about the MADU Croissant ($5), but I’d go straight for the Cereal Prawn Croissant, which is inspired by the iconic zi char dish. Other sandwiches like the Nori Jambon Ciabatta, slathered in umami nori mayo, nori butter, and Emmental cheese, are testament to the fact that big and bold flavours are the norm here.

Two standouts emerge from the dessert menu: Bolu Keju (S$6), a classic Indonesian “cheese cake” jazzed up with bourbon vanilla and cheddar cheese, and an irresistible-sounding Espresso Pistachio (S$9.90). Drinks-wise, we hear the unique Yuzu Espresso Tonic and Coconut Café Latte (S$6) are must-orders.

I’m all about that umami, and I can definitely see myself making a trip down very, very soon.
