With three outlets islandwide, the casual restaurant, modelled after a cosy pizzeria the founder used to frequent in Tuscany, is no stranger to Singapore’s Italian food scene.

Both regulars and first-time diners are in luck, for they’ve recently revamped the menu to include an array of unique appetisers.

Whet your appetite with the Porchetta Salad (S$19.90), thinly sliced roasted pork belly, rocket salad, and fresh tomato mustard honey sauce. Do note that this is served chilled (my kind of salad).

Move on to the Sardine Fritte (S$20.90), an aperitivo snack of deep-fried and breaded sardines that require nothing but a squeeze of lemon — crisp, non-greasy, and not the slightest bit fishy.

But if you can only order one appetiser, Focaccia Aglio, Burro e Mozzarella (S$16.90), comprising freshly baked focaccia bread with garlic, butter, and Mozzarella Fior di Latte, is a must-try. Think cheesy, garlicky, and perfectly charred goodness you probably won’t get enough of — as long as you savour it on the spot.

Oh, and it’s also guaranteed to be a hit with the kids!

Moving on to the classics, the La Pizzaiola Speciale (S$27.90) features a base of tomato sauce and mozzarella Fior di Latte blanketed with arugula salad, shaved parmesan, and luscious roast beef slices, finished off with a generous drizzle of truffle oil.

Lose yourself in the intoxicating aroma of truffle as you sink your teeth into the chewy wood-fired dough, and just enjoy.

Instead of a regular open-faced pizza, why not switch it up with a Calzone (S$22.90), a folded pizza “pocket” of cooked ham, button mushrooms, tomato sauce, and Mozzarella Fior di Latte?

I liked how generous they were with the ingredients, but the calzone’s interior just felt a little too “watery” (especially due to the tomato sauce).

On a side note, my dream calzone would be made with a four-cheese (quattro formaggi) pizza.

As for the mains, I found the Risotto ai Funghi Porcini e Tartufo (S$26.90), a creamy risotto with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil, to be a tad too salty.

I did, however, relish the Pollo Biologico alla Diavola (S$33.90), a whole roasted organic spring chicken marinated with Italian herbs and spices, served with roasted potatoes and salad.

Despite its rather odd appearance (the chicken is sliced into half and smashed, before being roasted), the meat was juicy, succulent, and packed with flavour. Bonus points for the crispy, caramelised skin, which I had to save for last.

Don’t leave without ordering at least one dessert. You won’t go wrong with any of these three quintessential Italian desserts: Tiramisu (S$11.90), Crème Brûlée (S$12.90) or Panna Cotta (S$10.90).

My dining partners and I particularly enjoyed the latter, which was served with a tart berry compote that balanced out the smooth and sweet custard.

Round off the meal with a selection of Italian red, white, or sparkling wines, and you’re all set!
