Many Mexican restaurants and hotspots are easily accessible. For Rodeo Table, they’ve cosied up in the basement of the Mint Museum of Toys. If you’re unfamiliar with the location, not to worry, as the Mint Museum is conveniently located between City Hall Station and Bugis Station. 

What makes Rodeo Table ahead of its time is being the sole food and beverage (F&B) outlet in the building. To get to the restaurant, all you have to do is descend a flight of stairs by the entrance, and you’ll find yourself in the hidden bistro. The space is lit with warm yellow lighting and adorned with vintage posters to strike a sense of nostalgia. 

Unless you’re there for pre-drinks or an intimate experience, opt for the bar seating. In our case, we dove right in and ordered whatever looked good.

Starting with the Frozen Margaritas (S$18), there are three flavours to choose from—Lime, Strawberry, and Mango. We tried Lime and Strawberry, both of which were refreshing and definitely eased our exhaustion from the long week. Surprisingly smooth and sweet, the margaritas left us craving more. Our only regret was not opting for the pitcher, priced at just S$55.80 (in girl math, that’s easily three to four margaritas). 

We tried the recommended appetisers, which were the Baby Buffalo Chicken Wings (S$12.80 for 10 pieces) and the Elotes (S$13.80). The Baby Buffalo Chicken Wings had the server shaking the wings in a tub with the flavour of your choice. Since we love spicing things up, we went with the spiciest option—regretting slightly as our lips felt numb after the first bite. 

Luckily, we had the Elotes (Mexican Sweet Corn), which brought our palates from numbingly spicy to sinful goodness. Made with sweet corn, mayonnaise, bacon, lime, and parmesan cheese, it had a nice balance of sweet and savoury, with a tinge of juiciness from the corn. 

Once we were done with the starters, we dug into our mains—Tokyo Jambalaya (S$23) and Chicken Tinga Chef’s Tacos (S$4.80 per piece). Across all the mains we tried, the Tokyo Jambalaya definitely took the spotlight for its unique twist. 

At first, we were intrigued by the name—after all, Rodeo Table is a Texan-Mexican (Tex-Mex) cuisine restaurant, but Tokyo Jambalaya hinted at some Japanese influences. When the dish was served, we found that it was made with teppanyaki rice, fresh salsa, jambalaya sauce, jalapenõs, and turmeric spices. A part of us was worried that the spices would overpower the Tex-Mex flavours, but we were thankfully proven wrong. 

The dish turned out to be unexpectedly satisfying—perfect for you if you’re craving something hearty after having one too many drinks at Rodeo Table.
