If you answered satay or ha cheong gai (prawn paste chicken), you’re in luck because McDonald’s Singapore is turning these two hawker favourites into burgers! That’s right, we’re getting satay burgers and a ha cheong gai burger!

The Satay Burgers aren’t entirely new to the menu though. In fact, the last time they were on the menu was 10 years ago! Remember the Shiok Shiok Satay Burgers? Well, come 25 July 2024, the burgers will be making their glorious return to the menu. 

The burger will come in two variants — a chicken burger and a beef burger — both of which will feature a roasted and nutty satay sauce. The Satay Chicken Burger (from S$8.90) comprises tender grilled chicken, cucumbers, and onions sandwiched between two sesame buns. 

As for the Satay Beef Burger (from S$8.90), it will have  similar ingredients,  but with juicy beef patties instead, paired with the same nutty satay sauce. 

Another burger making a Ha-Ha-Hearty comeback is the Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Burger (from S$8.90). Available from 8 August 2024, the burger features a crispy chicken patty drizzled with a fragrant prawn paste dressing that is unlike other ha cheong gai burgers. 

It’s not a complete meal without some fries and this time round, McDonald’s is bringing back the criss-cut fries. They’re also introducing an all-new Thai Milk Tea Frappé — because who can resist a good cup of Thai milk tea , am I right?  

Dessert-wise, get ready to go coconuts for the Coconut Cone (from S$1.20), Coconut Hot Fudge Sundae (from S$2.50), and Coconut OREO McFlurry (from S$3.60). 

These new additions to the menu will only be around for a limited time only, so make sure to grab them while you can!

The cafe is situated within the premises of Rest Hotel Bugis, an ideal location for a pit stop on a sweltering (or rainy, in my case) afternoon.

There are no tiny, cramped tables in sight at this 20-seater cafe with al fresco seating. Rattan chairs and light wood elements give off a chill “resort” vibe you’ll want to bask in for hours.

My eyes were instantly drawn to the array of flavours at the gelato counter, ranging from Hokkaido Milk (S$4.90 per scoop) to Matcha Adzuki Red Bean (S$4.90 per scoop).

But first, the savoury stuff.

Savoury snacks

Although desserts are the cafe’s strong suit, you can choose from a modest selection of appetisers including Truffle Fries (S$9) with Thai sweet chilli or sriracha, Chicken Satays (S$10), and plant-based Chicken Nuggets (S$9). They’re best washed down with a ice cold Suntory Beer (S$12), of course.

At present, due to the manpower crunch, pasta dishes like the Squid Ink Tiger Prawn (S$18) and vegetarian-friendly Truffle Green Curry (S$16) are only available on weekends.

Inspired by the meals served on Business Class flights is the aptly named Business Class Breakfast (S$18). I happily tucked into this hearty plate of scrambled eggs, German pork sausage, mushrooms, salad with sesame dressing, and toasted brioche — it’s the kind of homely and unpretentious fare I love.

Crepe cakes & croffles

Two Bake Boys’ homemade crepe cakes are the real stars of the show. You can purchase slices, whole cakes, or even DIY boxes for your next birthday celebration. With flavours like Lychee Rose (S$9 per slice), Thai Green Tea ($7.40 per slice), and Cookies & Cream (S$8 per slice), there’s something for everyone.

I wish I could try everything, but let’s save that for another time.

When in doubt, one should always go for the tried-and-tested. In this case, it is their signature Thai Tea Crepe Cake (S$7.40), served with a creamy Thai milk tea sauce for that perfect IG-worthy drizzle.

The tea-infused crepes are painstakingly layered with fluffy fresh cream, yielding an end result that cuts like butter; it is a delicate thing of beauty. And best of all, their crepes cake are generally light and not too sweet.

Given how the croffle craze has taken over Thailand and South Korea, is Singapore next on the list? Perhaps.

I chose to top the Croffle Krub (S$8) with a scoop of Thai Tea Gelato (S$4.90). It was equal parts chewy and flaky, with a buttery syrup-glazed exterior — the stuff of dreams. It would be a crime not to order this.

There are grand plans to expand the menu (think house pour wines and savoury croffles), but for now, the current offerings at Two Bake Boys can definitely hold their own. Cafe hopping in Bugis, anyone?
