The Phobia exhibit at Science Centre Singapore is the first of its kind in Asia and will explore the science behind fear. This means that you’ll be forced to face some of your greatest fears at this exhibit. The exhibition will also help you to understand the broader subject of fear, as well as the psychology and physiology of fear. But don’t worry, all these will be done in a safe and interactive manner — if you’re not too crippled by fear that is. 

The exhibit will feature some of the most prevalent phobias present in society. If you see an exhibit decorated with all the things you’re afraid of, this might be a sign for you to man up and face your fears. 

For instance, if you’re like me and you have a fear of clowns, the exhibit will feature a giant statue of a scary clown that stares right into your soul, which in all honesty, did make my legs turn to jelly for a moment. 

Another common fear that many people have is the fear of spiders. Here, you’ll be required to put your hand into a spider enclosure with a little surprise waiting for you. If you struggle with Claustrophobia, the exhibit makes you confront your fear of tiny spaces head-on, by making you crawl through a one-way tunnel. This also means that once you go in, there’s literally no turning back, so you’ll have no choice but to power through — good luck!

The buried alive display which takes you back to the past — before the age of modern medicine, when the diagnosis of death was less accurate. In case you were wondering, it was common back then for people to be buried alive. Here, you can experience what it’s like to be buried alive, complete with sound and a first person POV visual of people shovelling dirt to bury the coffin — this too was pretty scary. 

Other exhibits include the exam hall — cue the N and O Level exam trauma — as well as the pirates exhibit which was giving us Pirates of the Carribean vibes. 

The entire Phobia exhibit is said to bring you on a thrilling experience to overcome your fears, and the team at Science Centre certainly ate and left no crumbs. This exhibition is not for the faint hearted, and you should definitely bring a friend along for some moral support — trust us, you’re gonna need it. The silver lining is: admission to the exhibit is free!
