The screenings are taking place now until 26 August 2023, and tickets to the screenings are absolutely free, on a first-come, first-served basis — so hurry down to chope your tickets if you wanna catch your favourite films. 

The Singapore Film Commission 25th anniversary festivities kick off today (4 August) with a screening of Royston Tan’s popular film “881”,  8pm at DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre. Apart from just watching the film, you’ll also get to munch on some kacang puteh — super nostalgic isn’t it?

Some local-made classics that will be airing include 12 Storeys by Eric Khoo — screening on 9 August 2023, 4pm at Esplanade Recital Studio — and Anthony Chen’s Ilo Ilo — screening on 12 August, 8.15pm at Esplanade Concourse. 

My personal favourite is Jack Neo’s I Not Stupid, which will be screening on 26 August, 8.15pm at Esplanade Concourse — please save me a seat if you’re planning to go down!

In case you didn’t know, we have produced some interesting thriller and horror films like The Maid — that is airing on 19 August, 10.15pm at Esplanade Concourse. It tells a tale of 18-year-old Rosa who arrives in Singapore to be a domestic helper. During the Seventh Month, she starts having nightmares and ominous visions which seem to suggest that things are not quite what they seem to be. 

I’m most curious to watch 23:59, which is screening on 19 August, 7pm at Esplanade Concourse. The psychological thriller is set in 1983, and takes place on a secluded island typically used for military training — kinda like Pulau Tekong of sorts. Rumour has it that the island is haunted by a vengeful spirit of a woman who unfortunately died at 23:59. Interestingly, the film also stars Mark Lee, who is best known for his comedic roles. 

Apart from full-length movies, the festival will also feature 15 short films which will be aired back-to-back on 5, 19, and 26 August, starting from 6.30pm onwards. These short films include Letter from the Motherland, My Father After Dinner, Ah Ma, The Tiger of 142B, and The Violin. 

If you’re looking for something to do over the next couple of weekends, you should definitely head down to the Esplanade area and watch these locally-made titles and soak in some Singapore pride. Remember, tickets are on a first come, first served basis — so make sure you head down early to score a seat!
