There’s just something about romantic movies that gets my heart racing. Whether it’s sweet young love, a tragedy that has me in tears by the end of the story, or both, I’m definitely a fan.

If you’re looking for a romantic film to accompany a cosy night in with your partner, look no further than this list of the best 14 films perfect for some Netflix and chill. Whether you like rom coms, musicals or animated movies, there’s definitely something for everyone!

1. Titanic

It’s not a romance movie list without one of the most iconic films of all time! Aboard the Titanic, an upper-class woman falls for a poor artist, but tragedy strikes when the ship collides with an iceberg. “You jump, I jump, right?” Sobs.

2. The Notebook

This cult classic is another film that plays on the whole ‘rich girl, poor guy’ trope, and I am absolutely here for it. The story follows two young lovers who are torn apart by differences in their social standing, so you just know it’s going to be a tearjerker.

Available on Netflix.

3. La La Land

Yes, this is yet another Ryan Gosling film, but with a lot more song and pizzazz. Considered one of the best romantic movies of the 2000s, a jazz pianist and aspiring actress fall in love — but what will chasing their dreams cost them? Vibe along with the award-winning soundtrack as you witness the beautiful story unfold together.

4. About Time

Time travel and love? Sign me up! This man with a special time-travelling ability uses his powers to pursue his romantic interest (because who doesn’t love Rachel McAdams?). In the end, the story weaves a heartwarming tale about love of all kinds with a few life lessons that both you and your partner can appreciate.

5. Me Before You

Emilia Clarke plays a cheerful and bubbly caretaker to a man who’s been left paralysed after an unfortunate accident — you’ll bear witness to how both their lives change after meeting each other. The love between the two main characters are almost palpable through the screen, making it a perfect romantic film to sob to.

6. Blended

Watch as these two single parents meet on a terrible first date, but in a twist of events, end up going on a holiday together (with their children). Expect a bit of slapstick humour and well, some stereotyping — but it’s still a pretty good rom-com for a lighthearted watch.

7. Carol

There aren’t many good queer movies (with proper representation) out there, but this one is defo a must-watch. In this drama period film set in the early 1950s, a department store assistant meets Carol, a beautifully glamorous woman. Watch how things take a turn when they start to fall for each other — the trials they go through are bound to tug at your heartstrings.

8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Grab your partner and get comfortable, because this is one of those romantic movies that brings you for a wild ride — but it’ll all be worth it in the end. After a bad split, this couple decides to erase each other from their memories (yes, it’s possible in this show!). However, they meet on a train yet again with no recollection of each other.

9. The Fault in Our Stars

As a coming-of-age romantic film, this one might be a little more suited to younger audiences (I can distinctly recall myself silently sobbing in the cinema at the tender age of 15). Two teenage cancer patients meet at a support group and fall for each other — what could go wrong? However, the story is ultimately one of love and hope.

Available on Disney+.

10. Crazy Rich Asians

Set against a familiar backdrop, this one may hit a little closer to home for us Singaporeans. This rom-com follows a college professor (Rachel) who flies to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family, only to realise that his family is one of the richest in the country. Extravagance aside, I would say it’s a pretty romantic watch overall.

11. Tune In For Love

K-drama fans, this one’s for you. Mi-soo (Kim Go-eun) and Hyun-woo (Jung Hae-in) meet at a bakery during the infamous IMF crisis and constantly cross paths along the course of their lives, but the timing just always seems to be off. The film might just remind both you and your partner how lucky you are to have found each other!

Available on Netflix.

12. Your Name

This movie might be an animated film, but it’s certainly loved by people of all ages. Two strangers magically swap bodies and search for one another, ultimately forming a deep connection that’s bound to leave a lasting impression — believe me when I say that I was straight up sobbing

Available on Netflix.

13. Our Times

Who doesn’t love a good Taiwanese rom-com? Watching this film might just bring back some nostalgic memories for you and your partner as you witness Truly Lin and oh so handsome ‘bad boy’ Hsu Tai-yu work together to chase their respective romantic interests — but of course, end up falling for one another instead.

14. In The Mood For Love

This film was produced by Wong Kar-wai, so you know it’s going to be good. One of the most artsy romantic movies ever, In The Mood For Love follows these two neighbours who slowly come to realise that their spouses are having an affair with each other. The film is moody, electric, and feels like a slow burn — the perfect spicy film to watch with your partner.

I don’t know about you, but I’m all ready to binge watch some of these romantic movies over the weekend. Which will you be starting with?
