After testing the waters with pop-ups all around Singapore, Bakery 1946 AKA Suhyeongdang, a famous bakery from Daegu, Korea, has finally opened their first physical store in Suntec City.

Not only will you be able to choose from a display of over 50 Korean-style breads, but you’ll also be able to dine-in at a proper seating area, awash with natural light and traditional Korean elements.

There are sweet and savoury breads galore, but the former definitely reigns supreme here.

At this point, you’ve probably seen their signature K-Apple Bread (S$5.90) all over social media. Each adorable apple-shaped bun is made with red yeast rice dough, filled with indulgent cream cheese and jammy chunks of apple.

It’s a definite must-try for those new to the bakery.

You may have also already tried their realistic vegetable-shaped buns like the Carrot Bread (S$3.90), Sweet Pumpkin Bread (S$3.90), and Chewy Potato Bread (S$3.90).

If you’re up for something more out there, the Garlic Manju (S$3.90) is an acquired taste, with its pungent aroma and extremely sweet white bean paste filling.

As someone who can never resist anything prepared with corn, I was most keen to try the Corn Bread (S$3.90). It’s made with tapioca starch, hence the chewy texture, and breaks apart to a filling of cream cheese studded with sweet, juicy corn kernels. Very unique.

One thing we noticed was the abundance of breads with a red bean filling.

For instance, it’s hard to go wrong with the bestselling Original Daegu Sweet Red Bean Bun (S$3.50), which comes generously stuffed with chunky sweet red bean paste and walnuts.

I’d also recommend the Matcha Cream Red Bean Bun (S$4.80), which boasts a light, airy, and bittersweet matcha cream filling, though I did find the red bean paste a tad overpowering.

The Mugwort Korean Mochi Bread (S$3.80), also stuffed with red bean, is another fun pick; I couldn’t get enough of how chewy and stretchy it was.

Speaking of mochi, you’ll find plenty of options to chew on, ranging from regular Red Bean Mochi (S$4.50) in flavours like Injeolmi and Black Sesame, to Peanut Crumb Mochi Bun (S$3.80) and Yakimochi (S$2.90), a grilled sticky rice cake.

If you’re big on Taiwanese bolo buns with their sugary streusel-like tops, why not give the Black Sesame Peanut Crumb Bread (S$5.30) a try?

Soft, fluffy bread stuffed with a thick, rich and delightfully nutty black sesame paste, crowned with a crunchy peanut crumb top — it’s hard to say no to that.

Last but not least, you shouldn’t miss out on the selection of donuts, including Twisted Donut (kkwabaegi, S$2.90), Rice Cheese Donut (S$3.90), Sweet Rice Pumpkin Donut (S$3.90), and Sweet Rice Bean Donut Ball (S$3.90).

Once you’ve had your fill of bread, wash ’em all down with a newly launched line-up of Korean-inspired beverages.

We were most impressed (and intrigued) by the sweet, lightly herbaceous Ginsengccino (from S$7.90), as well as the Mugwort Latte (from S$7.30), which had a mildly bitter and earthy flavour reminscent of matcha.

However, both the Black Sesame Latte (from S$7.30) and K Salted Vanilla Latte (from S$6.90), though IG-worthy, were way too milky and mild-tasting for our liking.

So, whether you have a sweet tooth or not, these breads are worth trying at least once. Just try not to head down during peak hours as you will find yourself battling the lunch crowds.
