Popular family-run bakery Olsen Bakehouse, best known for their locally-inspired chiffon cakes, has finally made its way to one of the most happening neighbourhoods in the East (hooray).

Formerly at Crawford Lane, the bakery has found its forever home at an IG-worthy all-white conservation shophouse along the iconic Joo Chiat stretch populated with some of my favourite cafes, eateries, and restaurants (think Petit Pain, Tigerlily Patisserie, Mr & Mrs Mohgans Prata, and many more)

The bakery, decked out in wooden accents and calming neutral tones, is, unfortunately, a takeaway-only concept, but you are more than welcome to bask in the tranquil space for a bit.

Although not halal-certified, they are a family-friendly vegetarian and vegan bakery — their bakes do not contain pork, lard, gelatin, or alcohol.

Everything at Olsen Bakehouse is lovingly prepared using all-natural ingredients from local halal-certified suppliers with no additives, artificial seasonings or flavourings. All cakes are also siew dai (less sweet) — score!

Prices start from S$56 for a 5.5-inch cake suitable for 6 to 8 pax, but you can also purchase slices in boxes of 2, 4, or 8–10 (from S$16).

Fans of taro and orh nee must try the signature Orh Nee — homemade orh nee filling sandwiched between two layers of pandan chiffon cake and coconut buttercream, topped with coconut shreds and rose petals.

Another local dessert-inspired number is the Pulut Hitam, a light and fluffy signature pandan chiffon cake layered with homemade pulut hitam (black glutinous rice) filling, coconut buttercream, and a sprinkle of shredded coconut. The nostalgic-tasting Milo is a Milo lover’s dream with a base of malt chiffon cake, Milo filling, Milo nuggets, and chocolate drizzle.

Other flavours include Ondeh Ondeh, Sesame Yuzu, and Kopi, Kaya & Peanut Butter, all of which are worth a try.

Olsen Bakehouse also has a line-up of unique bakes catered to specific dietary restrictions or preferences, such as the salt and sugar-free Baby-friendly Banana Cake (S$48).

Their vegan options, namely the Chocolate Fudge (from S$56), Lemon Coconut Cake (S$14), and Banana Cake with Homemade Hazelnut Spread (from S$62), are no less decadent than their regular counterparts.

Crafted by Starbucks, the all-new Shiok-ah-ccino is a mix of coffee and tea, specially created to embody the Singapore spirit in place of celebrating the nation’s birthday. The beverage has just been launched across all stores on 22 July and will be available for a limited time.

Starbucks Shiok-ah-ccino

This year, two new flavours grace Starbucks’ menu. The Starbucks Shiok-ah-ccino is a mix of aromatic coffee and nutty hojicha tea blended with ice and chocolate chips, guaranteed to satisfy your caffeine need. Finished off with fluffy whipped cream and a Merlion Bearista chocolate topper, it’s an adorable beverage you should not miss.

The Tall-sized Shiok-ah-ccino is priced at S$8.50, but an upgrade to Venti (S$10.20) gives you a complimentary SHIOK! Spoon, a stainless steel cutlery that’ll fit right at home.

The Starbucks Neapolitan Frappuccino (S$8.50 for Tall) has been on their secret menu for some time now — but today, this secret will be revealed. Look forward to layers of mocha sauce, strawberry sauce and vanilla bean powder combined with ice and milk, then finished with whipped cream, mocha sauce drizzle and crunchy waffle topping — a sweet indulgence for dessert lovers.

Starbucks SHIOK! Food

Besides the two Shiok-ah-ccinos, Starbucks has also launched a series of SHIOK! Food, a local twist on cakes and pastries that Singaporeans will love. The Orh Nee (Yam) Cake (S$7.50) is layers of soft sponge topped with taro yam paste and coconut cream, holding a subtle sweetness that’ll melt in your mouth.

Other selections include the Milo Dinosaur Cheesecake (S$7.50) and Mango Sago Cake (S$7.50).

Since dining-in is restricted, the Starbucks Shiok-ah-ccino and SHIOK! Food can be ordered via Mobile Order & Pay, or via delivery platforms such as Grabfood, Foodpanda or Deliveroo.
