The good news is that many popular stalls from Malaysia have set up shop on our shores, and that’s where Pontian MeiGui BBQ (玫瑰海鲜园) comes in.

You no longer need to make that 47-minute drive from Tuas Checkpoint, as the famous eatery best known for their freshly grilled seafood BBQ has opened in a coffee shop in Geylang, just five minutes from Aljunied MRT Station.

The ordering process is fairly straightforward: choose your fish, shellfish and/or veggies, followed by your desired portion size (from 100g), and how you’d like ’em prepared — boiled or grilled with sambal or butter.

It seems as though everyone orders the Stingray with Sambal (from S$5 for 100g), which comes generously slathered in super shiok housemade sambal. You’re highly recommended to enjoy it dipped in cincalok (fermented shrimp sauce), with a squeeze of calamansi and a side of White Rice (S$0.50).

Other varieties of fish include the likes of Indian Threadfin (from S$5 for 100g), Red Snapper (from S$5 for 100g), Black Pomfret (from S$5.50 for 100g), Halibut (from S$5 for 100g), Pompano (from S$5 for 100g), and so much more.

Take your pick from the assortment from shellfish like Prawns (from S$5 for 100g), Slipper Lobster (from S$5 for 100g), Siput Gong Gong (from S$8 for 350g), Cockles (from S$9 for 350g), and Clams (from S$8 for 350g) — we hear the Butter Lala (clams) is the real deal.

And of course, no hearty BBQ meal is complete without add-ons like Sotong (S$10), which comes with free Lady’s Finger (S$6 for a la carte) and the option of topping up for Petai (+S$3).

Orders can be placed beforehand via Whatsapp. Otherwise, be prepared to wait, especially during peak hour.

Savouring Malaysian seafood BBQ at reasonable prices without the travel time — what’s not to like?

Tucked away in a kopitiam in Ang Mo Kio, Sambae is helmed by an impressive young chef who has already managed to clinch prizes in both national and international competitions. 

You definitely have to try his Sambal Stingray Rice Bowl with Onsen Egg (S$7.50), which features perfectly charred stingray with deliciously umami, tangy, and spicy sambal chilli atop a bed of pearl rice. The chilli isn’t as spicy as most, but that just means those with a lower spice tolerance (like me) will finally be able to enjoy it.

Can’t get enough? You can also get the sharing portion of sambal stingray from just S$15. 

If you’re craving other seafood dishes, opt for the Sotong Rice Bowl with Onsen Egg (S$7.50) for fresh and oh-so-tender squid rings with a slightly sweeter rendition of the sambal sauce. For those with larger appetites, add on additional stingray or sotong for just S$2.50 — what a steal! 

Other menu items also include Egg Fried Rice (from S$4), Sambae Fried Rice (from S$4.50) and Sambae Lala (from S$12).

Patrons also rave about Sambae’s Chicken Nanbam (S$4.50) which comes with generous chunks of deep-fried chicken. What makes this dish stand out is the chef’s secret sauce with diced onions and egg bits that’s reminiscent of a creamy mayo-tartar sauce — defo a must-try (especially with beer). 

Regardless of whether you’re dining solo or with your bae, you know where to go!
