I went for a unique cell renewal facial for pigmentation and clogged pores to see if I could finally get the skin of my dreams

by Christabel Tan

As someone who’s made it a goal to step out of her comfort zone by trying new things this year, I love convincing my friends to follow suit, which makes it extra fun.

So, when my colleague Shaf decided that it was high time to finally get her skin on track and go for her first-ever facial, I knew just the place to bring her to.

For context, she’d just switched up her skincare routine a couple months back but wasn’t seeing any visible results. Her skin still looked dull, with annoying clogged pores that didn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

She was also really, really eager to find the answer to the age-old question: what is her skin type?

That’s why I decided to introduce her to 21 Aesthetics, an aesthetics service provider in Raffles City that specialises in medi-spa facial treatments alongside their medical aesthetics services arm.

They offer an array of personalised, results-driven treatments that prioritise the comfort of the client above all. As such, every facial treatment here begins with a one-on-one consultation.

However, as Shaf was wearing a full face of makeup, she proceeded to first get her skin double-cleansed, along with a relaxing facial massage — score!

Afterwards, she received the in-depth skin analysis, which started with the consultant first using the 200x magnification skin scanner on the inside of her arm (where there’s barely any sun exposure), so as to give us an example of what good collagen structure should look like.

In contrast, the skin on her face was revealed to be on the dry and dehydrated side, despite her thinking all along that she had combination skin. She also had an uneven skin tone, along with sun spots, pigmentation concerns, and dark circles.

Shaf was hence recommended the Cellular Renewal Facial, which is designed to deeply cleanse enlarged and/or clogged pores, diminish the appearance of skin blemishes and pigmentation with thorough exfoliation to reveal a brighter and more even skin tones.

She was then led to the cosy and calming treatment room outfitted with a super snug bed, whereby the facial commenced with a much-need pressure point massage.

What makes this particular facial unique is the use of an exfoliating chemical peel that’ll leave your skin feeling refreshed and renewed — hence the name “cellular renewal”.

There were two different types of acids used, the first targeting surface-level pigmentation (which causes an uneven skin tone) and the second for clogged pores. Shaf did experience a mildly uncomfortable tingling sensation, but it was only for a few minutes.

This was followed by the extraction process, which Shaf wasn’t really looking forward to, especially since it was her first time. Despite the aesthetician noting that Shaf’s pores were very clogged, she still made sure to take her pain tolerance into consideration and use extra gentle extraction techniques.

The esthetician then applied a toner, followed by a high potency serum using cryotherapy, that was cold and soothing to Shaf’s post-extraction skin.

After that, the best part of the facial commenced: an incredibly relaxing massage, a hot compress, and a hydrating soft mask that was left to dry for about 15 minutes.

Let’s just say that Shaf was sound asleep by this part.

Finally, the treatment came to an end with several finishing touches: toner, moisturiser and the all-important sunscreen — so that Shaf could step back out into the afternoon sun without worrying about those harmful UVB/UVA rays.

Unlike facials that are designed to lift and tighten the skin through light or energy-based technology, the post-treatment effects of the Cellular Renewal Facial aren’t super drastic. However, Shaf’s skin felt a lot cleaner and less clogged.

Over the next few days, she also reported that the texture of her skin was a lot smoother than usual and that it was way easier to apply makeup. For instance, she felt that she didn’t need to apply as much concealer on her under eyes as she usually does.

The post-treatment benefits of this facial will take effect over the course of a few days, so like Shaf, you can also expect to see a gradual improvement in your skin!

All things considered, the Cellular Renewal Facial really inspired Shaf to take better care of her skin and go for regular facials — you’re never too young (or old) to start!
