Say no more to dull and tired skin with this facial treatment that’s perfect for first-timers

by Christabel Tan

If you didn’t already know, stress can (and will) take a toll on your skin.

I noticed that my colleague Charmaine has been feeling extra stressed lately, which in turn was causing her to break out. Her skin was also looking dull and tired — not a good look, given that this was just a couple of days before her birthday celebrations.

She definitely did not want to be hearing “aiyo girl you never drink enough water ah?” right and left especially when spending time with her extended family.

Being the good colleague (and friend) that I am, I decided to treat her to a long overdue pampering session in the form of a relaxing facial. I mean, she had never gone for one, and it helped that she didn’t have a proper skincare routine.

After all, facials play an important role in skin health, regardless of age. Not only do they treat and rejuvenate the skin, but they have also been proven to be a source of stress relief and psychological relaxation.

I decided to bring Charmaine to 21 Aesthetics, an aesthetics service provider that specialises in offering medi-spa facial treatments in Raffles City alongside their medical aesthetics services arm.

The brand takes pride in crafting tailored, personalised solutions with the client’s comfort and individual needs as top priorities. As such, before commencing the treatment, she sat down for a one-on-one consultation which involved an in-depth skin analysis.

It was no surprise that the questions asked were very comprehensive, ranging from one’s current skincare routine to allergies and medical conditions.

Despite Charmaine thinking that she had dry skin, it was revealed that she had oily combination skin all this time. The skin analysis also revealed that she had “congestion issues” AKA clogged pores and irritation, as well as unstable pH levels, causing her skin to fluctuate between dryness and oiliness.

The consultant also proposed eye treatments for her dark circles, which she’d been experiencing for the past few years, likely due to lack of sleep and yes, stress.

Eventually, Charmaine was recommended to go for the Medi Glow Facial, which is best suited for those with dull, patchy and/or dehydrated skin. It helps to deeply hydrate the skin, and promises an instantly brighter and clear complexion after the first session.

It honestly sounded a little too good to be true, but hey, never say never.

The consultant also suggested for her to have an aqua peel — an add-on treatment that uses an exfoliating AHA and BHA solution to pull out gunk from the skin and soften blackheads.

Finally, Charmaine was led into the cosy and inviting treatment room, where she got to snuggle up under a comfy heated bed. The aesthetician started off with a really relaxing pressure point massage before cleansing the skin.

This was followed by an exfoliating mask, and then five minutes under a facial steamer, so as to open up the pores, and rid the skin of dirt and trapped sebum.

It was then time for the add-on, the aqua peel. The aesthetician used a special suction device that works more effectively and efficiently to deep cleanse each pore with precision, preparing the skin for better absorption of the products that are being used in the facial.

She shared that it also had whitening and exfoliation properties — the more the merrier!

Given that it was her first facial experience, Charmaine was a little apprehensive about the extraction process. However, with the help of the suction machine and the aesthetician using super gentle hand techniques, the extraction went by in a jiffy. Most importantly, she was kept comfortable throughout.

A serum was then applied to the skin using a cryo machine, which helps to minimise the appearance of pores, tighten the skin, and give it a bit of a lifting effect. Hello, cheekbones

She then got to enjoy yet another relaxing massage, followed by a hot compress, and last but not least, a soothing clay mask. It was left to dry for about 15 minutes, giving Charmaine time to get in a cat nap.

In fact, the entire treatment had been so relaxing that she dozed off a few times during the process.

True to its claims, this Medi Glow facial did make Charmaine’s skin look visibly glowy, brighter, and a lot more hydrated (just look at the before and after). She looked refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on anything.

Over the next few days (and on her actual birthday), she reported that the application of makeup went on a lot smoother than usual, and that she received plenty of compliments about her skin — score
