Design a sweet pair of kicks at SG’s first sneakers art jamming studio

by Christabel Tan

Unique art jamming concepts are popping up all over Singapore and with good reason. We live in a city starved for stimulation — the desire to seek out new activities, new sights, and new things to do comes naturally to us. If you’re looking for an artsy date idea with your BFF or partner, a Sneakers Art Jamming session at Artistra Studio along Beach Road may just be right up your alley.

Run by Alicia of The A Label, a shoe and bag customisation business, Artistra Studio specialises in guided sneakers art jamming, the first of its kind here.

The aesthetic studio space is decked out in cream and pastels, with dappled sunlight streaming in through the windows and a playlist of chill tunes to vibe to. You’re all set for a (hopefully) therapeutic afternoon of art jamming.

All-inclusive package

A package is S$55 for two hours and S$65 for three hours. I highly recommend the latter — the entire process can get pretty time-consuming. The following materials are provided:

  • Sneakers
  • Customisable stencils
  • Brushes
  • Premium leather paint
  • Dryer
  • Transparent drawstring bag
  • Soft guidance

A Bring Your Own Sneakers package is also available at S$35 for two hours and S$45 for three hours. Bring a pair of leather canvas sneakers for the best results.

Finding the right hue

Got a good eye for colour coordination? Put your skills to the test at the paint station. Mix and match till you achieve the hue of your dreams (it’s harder than you think).

Novices like me can turn to the handy colour cheat code provided at every table. According to Alicia, powder blue and dusty pink are popular choices amongst participants. I envisioned my pair of sneakers to have different hues of green, reflecting my love for matcha.

After mixing up your paints, it’s time to work with the stencils and literally colour between the lines. The photo above shows the makings of my matcha swiss roll — it was a struggle.

Apply a thin coat of paint to your sneaker, blow-dry, and repeat. You’ll need at least three coats of paint for every section, so patience and attention to detail is a must. Remember to just trust the process and let your creative juices flow.

Once your design is complete, the staff will give your sneakers a quick touch up with acetone, and you’re good to go. What will your friends think when they see you in your sick new kicks? Oh, and don’t forget to give Artistra Studio a quick shout-out on Instagram or TikTok.

The sense of fulfilment you get from customising and wearing your very own creation is unlike any other.
