As a durian lover, I absolutely love the months of May to August — because that’s when I get to feast on the King of Fruits. However, there are times that I end up with lower quality durians, especially when I’m on a tight budget. If you can relate, then you won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind Durian Confidence Course (DCC)!
Hosted by local retailer 99 Old Trees, this course is the ultimate durian experience that will empower all fellow fanatics to choose their own fruit, ensuring that you get quality durians all the time.
First, you get an all-inclusive lesson that will cover topics like identifying different durians (from Malaysia), how to choose the best durians and open them, and even a sharing of over-selling techniques used by some sellers. No more falling prey to hiked up prices!
Put your newfound knowledge to the test at the tasting session that will have six different cultivars, free-flow Mao Shan Wang, and drinks like coconut and cooling water. Yes, you heard right — all-you-can-eat Mao Shan Wang, so this is definitely the time to go all out.
Still can’t get enough? Those who sign up for the course will also be going home with an exclusive goodie bag filled with a “Certified-in-Durian” T-Shirt, a durian squishy, a Stinky Roll (U.P. S$27), and a DCC manual.
The DCC sessions will be held on 20, 22 and 28 June 2023, and tickets will set you back S$128 per pax. However, if you go with one or more people, you’ll get to enjoy a discounted rate of S$99 per person! TBH, for the goodies, unlimited Mao Shan Wang, and the knowledge that you’ll be walking away with, it’s pretty worth it (especially if you can eat loads of durian).
Each session is 90 minutes long, and can only take up to eight people — so I’d recommend making a booking in advance since slots might get snapped up pretty quickly. If you miss the first few slots, there will also be three more sessions in July. At the time of writing, dates are still unconfirmed since it’s determined by the durian season, but you can keep a lookout for updates via their website.
For those of you who can’t make it down to any of the sessions, 99 Old Trees has also set up an Anti-Durian Scam Hotline. From 12pm to 9pm daily, anyone can snap a photo of the durian they wish to purchase and send it to durian experts via WhatsApp (+65 9822 2495). And yes, this service is free! How cool is that?
