Recently, Singapore has seen a wave of closures in the art scene, with cultural landmarks such as The Projector and Filmgarde Cineplexes bidding farewell. The news has sparked conversations about the city losing its soul, as independent arts and cultural sites increasingly give way to corporate developments.

Despite the grim outlook, the announcement of Filmhouse’s opening has given us a second chance at supporting these platforms. The new cinema officially soft-launched in February this year and is now hosting its Filmhouse Warming Party—and everyone is invited.
What to expect
It kicks off the two-month-long celebration with an introduction to a Music in Film series that celebrates the cultural impact of musical films, starting with the iconic La La Land, alongside Whiplash and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Keep an eye out for more movie announcements as well as the housewarming programmes between April and May.

Other films you can catch at Filmhouse
Do check out Filmhouse’s other movies, ranging from the latest releases like Project Hail Mary and The Drama, to beloved classics like Princess Mononoke by legendary director Hayao Miyazaki. Make sure to support local works like Amoeba, an award-winning film by director Tan Siyou, who follows four rebellious girls as they form a secret gang. The tickets are S$13 for weekday standard, with varying costs for weekends and concessions.

At a time when Singapore’s independent arts spaces are under pressure, Filmhouse’s arrival feels like a rare opportunity to keep the scene alive. Whether you’re there for the movies, the music, or the community, showing up might be the simplest way to make sure these spaces don’t disappear for good while also having a blast.
