I’m spending my CNY the lazy way in 2022 — here’s how you can too

by Vera

The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, comes as a wave of ambivalence to many — while it’s nice getting to be reunited with friends and relatives you haven’t seen for a while now, I can’t say the same for the amount of prep work, hours spent on cooking, and the cleaning up after.

Yes, I’m torpid, and yes, I’m spending my Chinese New Year the lazy way this year. In 2022, I’m bidding all the fuss farewell. Why lift a finger to prep when you can use that same finger to “add to cart”?

With my phone and Grab app in hand, here’s how I do it:

For the ones too lazy to cook

If you’re zeroing in on this portion of the article, chances are that you’re not intending to pour in hours to whip up a feast, or that you simply can’t because you’re as good as helpless in the kitchen. Either way, not to worry, I’ve got you, fam.

With the time that you’re saving on cooking, you can take a short-long nap and still have time to spare. A great variety of deliver-on-demand options run aplenty these days, and one such choice is Soup Restaurant’s CNY Blissful Set (now S$138, U.P. S$181.50) which is now going at 24% off on GrabFood.

For the single price, you’ll enjoy Baby Abalone Yu Sheng (S), Samsui Ginger Chicken (S), Traditional Steamed Rice with Chinese Sausage & Mushroom (M), Soup of the Day (M), and two bottles of Coke Zero to share amongst 4-5 people.
A little more scrolling through the superapp will also bring your attention to a myriad of other delicious meals to treat your family to, and up to 38% off GrabFood at that — don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot eat this CNY.

For the ones who don’t want to leave the house for groceries

Since every cooking essential you could ever need or want is found here on GrabMart, there’s truly every reason to get them delivered right to you, especially with a 28% discount when you use the promo code “HUAT28”.

As I’m losing track counting the number of steamboat dinners I’ve been planning this season (no complaints though, steamboat is superior and you can’t change my mind), it’s becoming increasingly apparent to me that my best solution is to checkout all the ingredients I need and have them sent straight to my doorstep. No more fumbling with my shopping basket while jostling through the self-checkout lane for me this year.

Amongst the perennial supermarket offerings, Don Don Donki has emerged as the place for shabu meat (from S$10 on GrabMart) that’s both fresh and affordable, delectable and fuss-free Japanese soup broth (from S$4.90 on GrabMart), as well as wallet-friendly yusheng (from S$22 on GrabMart) straight from one of the best places for sashimi-grade salmon. Sit back, and have the whole lot of ingredients sent straight to you when you check out via GrabMart — life really can be that convenient sometimes.

Your alcohol stash for the evening is also covered with Drinkies, and you’ll also receive a free Tiger Grocery Bag worth S$8 when you purchase two Tiger 10s Pack. And spoken like a true party enthusiast, the Lunar New Year and its celebrations have become almost synonymous with booze and card games — so you know that the party isn’t anywhere complete without alcohol.

For the ones who are (already) out of CNY snacks

If you forgot to order more CNY goodies and are at risk of your guests starving, simply get them sent instantaneously from Tai Chong Kok who’s offering 15% off selected items including sesame cookies and pumpkin seed crisps. Or, stick with what you know and roll with Fragrance with 35% off goodies such as their famous bak kwa, salted egg potato chips, fish skin, and more.

Either way, your last minute snacking needs are wholly covered by GrabMart, so you can nibble all you want at your goodies for now, but don’t forget to replenish the stash just before your guests arrive!

For the ones who need a wardrobe update, stat

Shopping for new outfits each CNY might come as a chore to some, or perhaps you simply lack the time to get yourself out of your work desk and into a changing room. And as if online shopping wasn’t already attractive enough, a whole host of deals just made it even more worth your buck.

No matter the budget, SHEIN not only meets you there, but also over delivers where variety is concerned. There’s no style you can’t find on the platform, and now you can also receive up to S$8 off storewide with a stipulated minimum spending when you pay with GrabPay.

Those looking for a modern twist to the classic cheongsam silhouette might find their piece at Lark & Peony, a local studio that specialises in slow-made heritage wear that’s crafted in small batches, so you know that whatever you’re getting is uniquely and intentionally fashioned. Take 10% off sitewide when you pay via GrabPay, and just in time for your Lunar New Year visiting needs at that. Because nothing spells festive spirit like supporting local this 2022.

You’ll receive up to 2% back in GrabRewards points when you pay with PayLater & GrabPay as you make these purchases, so I don’t see any reason not to.

If your wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs a makeover but your home as well, you can look to exclusive brands like TANGS, HipVan, Dyson, iStudio and more on PayLater and GrabPay to spruce up your space and keep it guest-ready.

Try this cute AR filter & receive rewards when you gift on Grab

AR filters have been all the rage these days, and for good reason. Thanks to the wonders of tech, we’ve truly revolutionised the way we consume. Now, taking a selfie with a virtual life-sized lion is just one filter away.

GrabGifts features this first-of-its-kind adorable AR lion in your frame, with whom you can pose to send greetings and well wishes to your loved ones through GrabGifts.

Channel your huat in this lucky draw & win 888,888 GrabRewards points

On top of all that jazz, what’s CNY festivities without a lucky draw, am I right? Putting your huat levels to the ultimate test, partake in GrabPay’s lucky draw and you might just win yourself 888,888 GrabRewards points, which will be given out to eight lucky winners each.

To throw your hat in the ring, make an online transaction via your GrabPay Wallet with a minimum spending of S$18 for one chance to win. There’s no cap on the number of chances per user, so pay away, I say.

The participation period spans from now until 15 February 2022, and the draw will be held on 28 February 2022. Here’s sending all the good vibes and huats your way.

So you know what they say, if you’re too lazy to do it yourself, have all your needs met with a push of a button so you can put the “happy” back into “happy new year”.
