Having gone to university at SMU, to say that I’m well-acquainted with PoMo is an understatement. Back in the day, students like us would frequent the place like it’s our neighbourhood mall, stopping by for the ever-so-regular bowl of boat noodles. Now, the mall has transformed into GR.iD (GRID), a futuristic-looking hub that looks like it’s straight out of 2030.
If you’re thinking of taking the trip down, here are 10 things to eat, do, and keep yourself entertained with at GR.iD (GRID).
1. Chow down on Chops! Grill & Sides
Your trusty western food offering, Chops! Grill & Sides ensures that you’ll still get your hearty meat fix without breaking the bank — a balance that most of us will be hard-pressed to find. Here’s where you’ll find Golden Chicken Schnitzel, Ha Cheong Chicken, Crispy Sesame Wings, as well as other interesting iterations of the standard menu finds.
2. Solve a murder @ Loading (Live Action Role Playing)
You’ve been to escape rooms before, but I’ll go out on a whim and say, but never like this one. Loading is an immersive investigation that’ll have you forgetting that you aren’t actually a real-life detective solving a murder mystery that has unfolded before your eyes. It uses real scenes, sound and light simulation, service design, mechanism configuration, and even NPC interaction to give players an immersive sense of immersion.
3. Wind down with a view @ Kamikaze Asian Tapas Bar
Lauded as GR.iD’s (GRID) shiny new rooftop bar, Kamikaze Asian Tapas Bar features 90c skewers that include your usual suspects like shiitake mushroom, pork belly, lady’s fingers, shishamo, cocktail sausages, and more. Aside from great fare to bond over, another thing’s for sure at Kamikaze bar — gorgeous nighttime views of the city while winding down after a long day.
4. Relive Taiwan market nights @ Isshin Machi
What sounds very much like a Japanese restaurant is actually a Taiwanese joint that will bring you a taste of Taiwan in a time when travel seems so far away. At Isshin Machi, fill up on Signature Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles, Pork Wontons with House Made Sauce, and Brown Sugar Caramel Pearl Milk Tea to relive those fond night market evenings.
5. Go double time @ X Spin Club
With a myriad of spin studios popping up as of late, X Spin Club joins the slew with a chic new studio in the heart of town. Get your cardio of the day scheduled in and pump it out in an immersive rhythmic cycling session right here.
6. Snag a sweet snack @ House On The Moon
With House On The Moon‘s closure at Great World City, many were left disappointed that they could no longer get their favourite desserts at the modern European restaurant Now, they’re reopening at GR.iD (GRID), where you’ll finally be able to get your hands on the delectable Kaya Kopi, Coconut Mango & Passion Fruits, and Black Forest tarts once more.
7. Work up a sweat @ The Battleground
If spin wasn’t for you, then this three concepts-in-one gym might have something to tickle your fancy. At The Battleground, there are also indoor cycling classes, but more than that, there’s also functional training, as well as Singapore’s first slide-board fitness workout, Slyde-X, which presents low to medium impact on a slide board to bring you a full body conditioning class.
8. Embrace the boba lover in you @ Kung Fu Tea
Most of us love boba more than we’d care to admit, so it’s completely alright if you find yourself helplessly gravitating towards any bubble tea joint in a mall — there’s no judgement in this household. Kung Fu Tea presents a variety of thirst-quenching options, including Winter Melon Tea with Lemon, Jin Xuan Oolong Tea, Cheese Milk Foam Green Tea, Pearl Cacao Latte, and many more.
9. Chomp away your cheat day @ Out Of The Bun
If you’re looking for a burger that’ll give you a bang for your buck, then Out Of The Bun‘s offerings that are stuffed to the brim should be music to your ears. Chow down on the Pulled Chick Burger, Crisp O Fish Burger, Chick Sandie, and even plant-based offerings like the Impossible Me and TiNDLE Chick Burger that are suitable for most diets.
10. Make music out of waste @ Green Drumming
In a first-of-its-kind instalment, Green Drumming by BEAT’ABOX literally makes treasure out of trash that will have you making music out of recycled waste. The message, as they’ve put so eloquently, is that “rhythm is everywhere, and waste can be made beautiful with a second chance”.
