While afternoon tea has always been associated with the traditional English afternoon tea since it was introduced in England in 1840… The Chinese have always had a tea culture of their own as well, with the history of tea drinking originating from ancient China, almost 5,000 years ago.

“According to legend, in 2732 B.C. Emperor Shen Nung discovered tea when leaves from a wild tree blew into his pot of boiling water.”

Combining Chinese tea culture with the English tradition of high tea, while introducing hanfu (traditional Chinese Han clothing) into the mix – how’s this for an afternoon tea with a twist?

For those looking to upgrade your high tea experience, try something new, or do something that’s oh-so-photo-worthy, you need to head over to Tea Chapter (established in 1989!) at Chinatown.

This is where you’ll be able to partake in Hanfu High Tea by Menghui | Anotherday x Tea Chapter (S$249 for two people). The whole experience will take at least three and a half hours with different things to do:

  1. Get dressed and styled in your hanfu costume at Menghui (45 minutes)
  2. Take photos in Menghui’s studio (1 hour)
  3. Choose a second hanfu and head to Tea Chapter for your afternoon tea – you will also be able to take photos here in the IG-worthy zones with traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese-style seating (1 hour 30 minutes)
  4. Head back to Menghui to change out of your hanfu (15 minutes)

From the intricate costumes and free hairstyling complete with elaborate Chinese hair accessories to the themed studio usage and premium tea and desserts – it’s an afternoon tea experience unlike any other.

This is where you’ll indulge in your pot of steaming hot tea (Imperial Golden Cassia or Lang He Pu Erh), two tea eggs, fish fillet, chapter 7 cookies and dragon rice balls – and feel like you’re been transported back into ancient times (or your favourite Chinese period drama! Hello Yang Mi in Eternal Love).

And if you’d like to get more out of your time in hanfu, you can feel free to head out of the teahouse and get some snaps around Chinatown too!
