There may be tons of fun things to look forward to in 2024, but the one thing I’m sure many of us are dreading is the GST hike. Sigh.
As such, coming across restaurants and eateries with no GST is like finding a light in the darkness. Okay, call me dramatic, but it really makes a difference.
Take Hankang Pocha, for instance. Pojangmacha-inspired concepts in Singapore are pretty popular these days, but this particular eatery in Tanjong Pagar not only absorbs GST, but also brands itself as “the most affordable Korean pocha“.
True enough, you can find an extensive array of mains under S$20, with quite a number of hearty options priced at S$12, like the Kimchi Stew, Spicy Kimchi Cold Noodles, Jjajangmyeon, and Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice. How can one go wrong with any of that?
You can also take your pick from a line-up of comfort food classics, like Scallion Seafood Pancake (S$16), Rice Cake Ramen (S$14), and Army Stew (from S$20.80), filled with the usual suspects of luncheon meat, fish cakes, sausages, kimchi, cheese, and ramyeon.
Chimaek enthusiasts can go for the Fried Chicken Platter (S$40), comprising saucy fried chicken in four different flavours — original, soy sauce, spicy, and garlic.
If Korean BBQ is what you seek, there are plenty of options to choose from, ranging from the theatrical Stone Plate Kimchi BBQ (S$26 for two pax) to the Hankang BBQ Platter (S$38), consisting of pork belly, beef ribeye, pork collar, marinated pork collar and assorted sides that are grilled before serving.
Very value-for-money, if you ask me.
Pricier options like Marinated Rib Eye (S$42), Beef Ribs (S$40), and Iberico Pork Collar (S$50) are available if you wanna splurge a little (since you’re already saving on most of the mains).
So, the next time you find yourself in Tanjong Pagar while on a bit of a budget, Hankang Pocha may just be the place you and your friends need. Happy feasting!
