There are days when only good banh mi will do, because cravings, am I right?
Unlike the neighbouring Banh Mi Thit by Star Baguette (one of the most popular banh mi spots in Singapore), Hi Banh Mi is a tiny eatery also nestled along Geylang Road, that not many people know of.
This hidden gem specialises in Vietnamese banh mi using ingredients that are all made in-house, from the crisp baguettes to the patê and chả lụa (ham).
You won’t go wrong with any of the thick and generously filled banh mi variations, but the Crispy Roasted Pork Sandwich (Bánh Mì Heo Quay, S$5.50), stuffed with crispy, fatty, and juicy roast pork, is a must-try.
Those who enjoy the addictive texture of pork skin (and chewy cartilage), can go for the Shredded Pork Skin Sandwich (Bánh Mì Bì, S$5.50).
I’d personally love the Beef Sandwich (Bánh Mì Bò, S$6.90), which features savoury and spicy beef chunks, the perfect complement to tangy pickled vegetables.
Seeking a non-meat option? The equally hearty Fried Fish Cake Sandwich (Bánh Mì Chả Cá, S$5.50), Sardines Sandwich (Bánh Mì Cá Mòi, S$5.50), or even the deceptively simple Sunny Side Up Sandwich (Bánh Mì Cá Mòi, S$4) will be right up your alley.
Don’t leave without trying the Vietnamese Fried Banana (from S$1.80 for 5pcs), similiar to that of the goreng pisang we all know and love — it’s one of the most popular street food desserts in Vietnam, and for good reason.
You can have your banh mi on the spot at the low plastic tables and chairs unique to Vietnam outside the store, but seating is very limited, so you’re better off getting your food (and Vietnamese coffee) to go!
