When it comes to Japanese food in Singapore, there are always plenty of hidden gems to be found.
Tucked away in the nondescript Sunshine Plaza is Ichi Tei, a small and humble hole-in-the-wall eatery that has been in operation since 2009 — that’s a whopping 13 years!
Ichi Tei specialises in high-quality yet reasonably-priced Japanese cuisine — the epitome of the phrase “oldie but a goodie”.
Start off with some fresh, thick, and plump slices of Salmon Sashimi (S$6), Hokkaido Scallop Sashimi (S$9), or Shiro Maguro (S$6), otherwise known as albacore tuna.
In fact, why not treat yourself to the Sashimi Moriawase (S$26) consisting of four different kinds of sashimi?
As for the mains, choose from a selection of teishoku, sashimi, and curry set meals, all of which come with miso soup and a side salad.
Most tend to go for the signature Salmon Mentaiko (Aburi) Don (S$13.50). Salmon slices are coated in a luscious, umami mentaiko sauce, flame-torched till smoky, and topped with sesame seeds and crunchy tobiko — delish.
You really can’t go wrong with the classic combination of salmon and mentaiko, which Ichi Tei has skillfully mastered. Portions are also bigger than they appear, so you won’t leave hungry!
You also won’t go wrong with the immensely popular Saba Set (S$11.50), a mainstay on the menu ever since the eatery’s opening.
For something a little more comforting, indulge in the Chicken Curry (S$12), Ika Teriyaki Set (S$18), or even the Yellowtail Cheek Set, which is well worth the S$20 price tag.
Don’t underestimate the soup served on the side — it may just be one of the best and most slurp-worthy renditions of miso soup you’ll ever try. Each bowl is chock full of fatty salmon chunks and radish cubes, yielding a rich, extra-concentrated flavour.
