If you’re a tonkatsu fan residing in the Northeastern part of Singapore (and beyond, if you’re willing to travel), you may or may not have heard of Kanaaji Katsu, one of Hougang’s best-kept secrets.
Tucked away in the Kimly Coffeeshop in Hougang Village, Kanaaji Katsu dishes out restaurant-quality katsu dishes, alongside a modest selection of donburi (including non-katsu options like chicken teriyaki and saba).
Whether you choose to enjoy your katsu in the form of katsu curry, katsu don, or on its own in a set with rice and miso soup, you can expect each order to be freshly-fried, and served piping hot. Portions are also very generous, so you’ll be getting the most bang for your buck, regardless of what you order.
Go for the signature Rosu Katsu Curry (S$7), which sees breaded pork loin fried till crisp, tender, and golden brown, on a bed of rice with mild Japanese curry, onions, carrots, and potatoes.
But pork is not the only star of the show; you can expect other proteins like dory fish, ebi (prawn), salmon, and chicken.
Seafood lovers can go for the extremely value-for-money Ebi and Fish Katsu Set (S$6.50), which comes with miso soup, vegetables, and rice — a hearty and filling meal that absolutely won’t break the bank.
Those who wish to further bulk up their meals can add on a la carte options like Rosu (S$5), Chicken (S$4.50), and Salmon Katsu (S$6).
It looks like Hougang may be home to even more hidden gems we have yet to discover, but before that, I’ll be heading over for my fill of katsu curry.
