If you were born during or before the early 2000s, chances are you’d be familiar with that one Singaporean drama series — The Little Nyonya. NGL, the theme song still lives rent-free in my head from time to time, but that’s just how iconic it is.
Fellow fans of the series, this one’s for you. The Peranakan Museum is finally reopening after three long years, and is hosting an Armenian Street Party during its opening weekend from 17 to 19 February 2023. You can expect an action-packed lineup of drop-in experiences, and the best part? Entry to the museum and a large majority of the activities is free for all!
Explore nine refreshed galleries within the museum to immerse yourself in all things Peranakan — think exhibits showcasing beaded slippers, beautiful tableware, and other displays detailing the rich history of the extensive Peranakan community.
The highlights of the street party include cooking and craft demonstrations (so you’ll learn how to impress your elders like Yue Niang did) and guided tours of the museum — did I mention it’s free? You’ll need to RSVP for some of these activities, so be sure to do so in advance to avoid disappointment.
For those who prefer more interactive experiences, you can actually customise your own coasters and take pictures in their 360° video booth!
There will also be unique live performances where you’ll be able to see the prettiest kebayas, listen to talented percussionists, and more.
You’ll also find a Makan Market where you can sample all the delectable and authentic Peranakan goodies your stomach can handle. Participating vendors include True Blue Cuisine, DOCHI DOCHI, Jekyll & Hyde and more, so you already know the food’s going to be good.
Ready to live your Nyonya dreams? Be sure to head down for a culture-filled weekend!
