Remember the now-defunct Hei Kim Cafe (one of the first cafes in Singapore to introduce the black sesame latte) along Changi Road?
It’s back, sort of, in the form of Piccolo by Hei Kim, a hidden cafe serving up cakes and coffee in Orchard.
After closing down its Changi Road premises, the folks behind Hei Kim ran an online home-based business, before finally finding this small industrial-themed shop space in Far East Plaza.
Unlike Hei Kim Cafe, Piccolo by Hei Kim has no hot kitchen or brunch offerings — you can expect a rotating menu of cakes and a selection of speciality coffee and beverages.
You can settle for the regular Burnt Cheesecake (S$7), or take things up a notch with the Coconut Espresso Cheesecake (S$10), which is gratuitously topped with sweet coconut cream and espresso.
Otherwise, the Honey Layered Cake (S$9) is Piccolo by Hei Kim’s take on Russian Honey Cake, or Medovik. Soft, caramelised honey cake is layered with honey-infused cream and wafer-like biscuits — it pairs perfectly with strong black coffee.
Other cake options returning from Hei Kim’s old cafe menu include the Black Sesame Matcha (S$9) and decadent Chocolate Orange Cake.
Pair your cakes with one of the many unique beverage concoctions, such as the Iced Strawberry Latte (S$7) and Iced Black Sesame Latte (S$7), robust, nutty, and dense in all the right ways.
If you’re looking for a not-too-crowded spot to chill out over cakes and coffee after a long day of shopping around the Orchard area, this is the place to visit.
I personally can’t wait to get my hands on the black sesame latte and matcha cake!
