Red Dot Mala Hotpot serves up affordable & addictive Sichuan cuisine till 2am

The Serangoon Road stretch of shophouses is home to many supper spots, but a certain eatery stands out from the rest. Despite its negligible online presence, it has its fair share of regulars eager to satisfy their cravings for fiery and savoury Chinese cuisine. If you find yourself wandering the area in search of late-night eats, look no further than Red Dot Mala Hotpot.

Conveniently located behind a bus stop (Opp Bendemeer Pr Sch 60141), this small, no-frills eatery is known for its enthusiastic service and authentic Sichuan dishes packed with wok hei.

First-timers may be tempted to go straight for the Mala Hotpot (from S$2), and I wouldn’t blame you (the eatery is literally called “Red Dot Mala Hotpot”), given that there are a plethora of ingredients like beef tripe, pork belly, and pork intestine to choose from.

Instead, save your stomach for the more reliable Grilled Fish (S$21.80), or shao kao yu, which can be served in mala, sauerkraut, or pickled pepper broth, just to name a few.

If you’re dining in a group (and we highly recommend you to do so), you can find both spicy, tongue-numbing classics like Preserved Egg Tofu (S$6.80) and Spicy Chicken (S$13.80), and tamer options like Salted Egg Chicken (S$16.80) and Dumplings (S$6.80). The unassuming noodle section is also worth checking out — the Chongqing Special Noodles (S$6.80) pair excellently with ice-cold Tsingtao beer.

The food menu is very extensive, so you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice.

Don’t forget to order the crowd favourites: Fried Eggs with Tomatoes (S$7.80), Shredded Potato with Chopped Chilli Pepper (S$6), and the incredibly popular Roasted Eggplant with Meat Pieces (S$18). The well-executed combination of shatteringly crispy eggplant and juicy pork is lauded by many — why not try it for yourself?

Red Dot Mala Hotpot is also available on food delivery platforms, with a hawker stall in Punggol, but dining in is always the best option. Extra chilli oil, please!
