Question of the day — what is the quintessential Singaporean pastime? If your answer is that we love joining snaking queues for free things, you’ve hit the nail on the head. To celebrate the opening of their newest three outlets, popular hawker chain Shi Nian (石年) is giving out bowls of their famous Pig Trotter Rice and Pig Leg Rice — all for free!
What’s that? Free food with no strings attached?
You heard that right! You’ll get to indulge in the oh-so-tender and fatty goodness of the famous stall’s braised pork without paying a single cent. They already have a whopping six existing branches around the island, so you know the food is good.
First and foremost, here are all the deets.
Head down to their various new stalls from 10.30am to 9pm to snag the promotion while stocks last at the following locations and dates:
- Kovan 209 Market and Food Centre (9 – 11 Mar 2023)
- Marine Parade Central Market and Food Centre (15 – 17 Mar 2023)
- Amoy Street Food Centre (27 – 31 Mar 2023)
The Pig Trotter Rice (U.P. S$5.90) boasts melt-in-your-mouth meat with the perfect balance of gelatinous skin and gravy, but don’t expect the typical vinegary taste here! Their rendition is inspired by the Longjiang version, an aromatic soy-based sauce with herbal notes.
For those who prefer leaner meat, opt for the Pig Leg Rice (U.P. S$5.90) instead. This dish has the same braising gravy with a different cut — one that’s less fatty and meatier (and yet, still tender).
While the other dishes sadly aren’t free, they’re still worth trying! Look out for their Pig Intestine Mee Sua (S$5.90), Swirly Intestines (S$9), Large Intestines (S$5), and more. Patrons also rave about the tangy and spicy chilli that goes well with each and every one of their dishes.
Given how popular Shi Nian is, be ready to bust out your inner auntie — but it’ll all be worth it in the end!
