Saving Up On Your Monthly Phone Bill With SIM-Only Mobile Plans

by Samantha Kwang

With Telco companies offering value for money and low cost no-frills data plans packages, customers are spoilt for choices. Hence, it does not come as a surprise to see the greater surge in demand for SIM-only plans. For those not in the know, here’s the run-down on these affordable contract-less plans, as well as plans you should check out!

What is a SIM-Only plan?

A SIM-Only plan is a post-paid plan that offers mobile data, talk time and messaging at a fixed monthly cost. This means you will not be bound by a contact with your telco company and will be free to switch between different telcos and plans.

Traditional contracts also require you to pay quite a hefty amount for exceeding the mobile data capacity. However, you don’t have to worry when your data capacity is reached for your SIM-only plan. You can still continue using your mobile data though at a managed and limited speed. No top-ups required!

The only setback is that you won’t be getting that $0 free phone or additional perks from these telco companies.

Who are the telcos in the SIM-Only market?

We all know the three major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) – Singtel, Starhub and M1, but there are now many other virtual telcos in the game as well. These Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are popping up so quickly that it can be difficult to keep track of them, as well as the MNOs they lease their networks from.

These information will be important to your decision-making process, as it entails the network service speed and reception cover you will receive. Here is a summary of the major players in the game now, as well as the MNO networks they are tapping on.

SIM-Only vs Contract?

Some of you might be on the fence on whether to keep your contract, or change to a SIM-only plan. As no one option is significantly better than the other, the answer to the question relies on your individual needs.

If you require a new phone, mobile line contracts may be more suited for you. However if you don’t need the latest smartphone or so much talk-time, going for a SIM-only plan could mean significant savings.

Hopefully this article will help you make a better informed decision in choosing a mobile plan that best suits needs.

Note: The prices and plans stated in our article are accurate as of 10 June. As details and promotions change often, please make sure to check with the telco’s official page to get the full updated details and T&Cs.
