If you’re looking for a sign to stop and smell the roses, let this be it.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all chaos in Yishun — those in need of a moment of peace and tranquillity can simply seek solace at Slow Bakes.
Tucked away in the Tzu Chi Humanistic Youth Centre, the cafe-bakery boasts a breezy semi-alfresco concept flanked by lush greenery and scenic waterfront views of Yishun Pond. It’s a hotspot for early risers, given that it opens from 7am till 2pm daily — you can take a stroll or exercise at the neighbouring Yishun Park before popping by for breakfast.
Slow Bakes specialises in wholesome, vegetarian-friendly handmade bakes, namely loaves and buns in flavours like Coconut, Matcha Mochi Red Bean, and Purple Sweet Potato Cranberry. Pair ’em with a simple, no-frills cup of coffee — prices for a standard Kopi-O or Teh-O start from S$1.80.
But the Toasts (S$2.80) are perhaps the most popular option here. There is a fairly unique selection of bread to choose from, which includes the likes of Sourdough, Matcha Loaf, and Tumeric and Sweet Potato Swirl, best paired with a healthy spread — fancy Kaya Butter, Berries Jam or even Avocado Chia Seed?
Seriously, S$2.80 for avocado toast is a steal.
You can even purchase jars of jam, peanut butter, and traditional kaya, handmade using only freshly squeezed coconut milk, eggs, cane sugar, and pandan leaves.
Simply top up S$4.50 for soft-boiled eggs (of the fresh barn-laid variety) and a drink with any purchase of bread or toast, and there you have it — a hearty yet affordable Breakfast Set that’ll get you up and running for the day!
A recent addition to the menu is Taiwanese Egg Cakes (from S$2) resembling Korean egg bread (gyeran bbang), with fillings like Milk Tea Custard, Apple Cinnamon, Spring Onion Cheese, and Brown Sugar Mochi.
You are highly recommended to head down early to beat the crowds and avoid disappointment (especially on weekends).
