Paya Lebar is not a place I tend to associate with cafes, but that seems to have changed. Enter the theatrics. Soul Coffee in KINEX is a themed cafe that takes themed cafes to the next level.
Once you’ve walked through the mist, there’s no turning back. Colour-changing light fixtures and a touch of greenery add a fantastical element to the already-magical space. I kid you not, every corner is IG-worthy.
There are no boring white walls in sight — the entire cafe is flanked by awe-inspiring immersive projections that change every few hours. Gaze upon majestic whales or sakura in full bloom as you sip on your coffee and get lost in this tranquil world. It’s a great space to take a much-needed “no thoughts, head empty” escape from reality.
Meet George Hillary, Singapore’s first humanoid robotic coffee master. Having gone through extensive artificial intelligence learning, robotic arm testing, and machine vision training, this robot barista specialises in the art of Pourover Coffee (S$9.90). Single-origin Ethiopian beans make for a subtle, clean-tasting brew.
There are plans to roll out a BYOB (be-your-own-barista) concept in the near future, as evident through tables equipped with bar glasswashers. I’m no barista, but making my own coffee does sound fun (if not slightly disastrous).
Horoscope-themed coffee & mocktails
The vibing doesn’t start till you have a drink in hand. Go for the photogenic Signature Horoscope Coffee (S$8.90 per glass) and Horoscope Mocktails (S$7.50 per glass) which make great conversation starters.
Is this not the perfect spot to ask your date for their sun, moon, and rising signs? Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Having to choose from the selection of pretty mocktails was tough, but we eventually settled on the Libra (S$7.50), a gorgeous purple-hued concoction of aloe vera juice, mint, and butterfly pea flower that was unfortunately way too sweet for our liking. We preferred the refreshing and slightly sour Saggitarius (S$7.50), with yuzu, apple juice, and Blue Lagoon.
The Aries (S$8.90), an iced espresso-based coffee with osmanthus, orange, and cheesecake whipped cream, was a unique touch on the typical iced latte, albeit with a tad too much milk.
Choose from an assortment of cakes, pastries, and macarons. The perfectly serviceable Wild Strawberry (S$7.90) and Hazelnut (S$6.90) will pair well with an unsweetened Espresso (S$3.50) or Flat White (S$5 for 8oz, S$6.50 for 12oz). Skip the saccharine Mango Yogurt (S$7.90).
Modern meets mystical
When you’re feeling rested and refreshed, pop into a cosy hidden room for a private Tarot Reading (S$68 for 15 minutes, S$128 for 30 minutes). Make sure to come with a specific set of questions in mind.
The team at Soul Coffee is also working on a Machine Analysis room that will use state-of-the-art technology to conduct chakra and aura reading sessions, as well as vibration therapy for “unbalanced energies”. Walk-ins for readings are subject to availability, but it’s best to make reservations by contacting +65 98767257.
It’s a connection to the spiritual realm with a side of coffee and technological advancement — Soul Coffee is really one to watch.
