Ever since I heard about Chin Mee Chin and its 101-year history as an old-school coffeeshop and bakery, I’ve wanted to try it. After all, for a confectionery like this to last a century and still attract regular customers, there must be something special about it.
So, together with a colleague, we recently dropped by Chin Mee Chin at NEX, its new and only establishment outside its original outlet at Katong. And here are my thoughts after trying it for the first time.
Located near Exit E of Serangoon MRT Station, Chin Mee Chin is one of the first establishments visitors to NEX will see. The interiors carry a sense of nostalgia, with walls and floor tiles reminiscent of classic kopitiams.
The perk of having a buddy with you is being able to try a range of items on the menu and not feel like you over-ordered. We went for the Kaya Toast (S$6.50 with a set), Choux au Craquelin (S$3), Ham & Cheese Danish (S$3.60), and Smashed Fried Chicken with Sambal Sandwich (S$8.80).
The highlight for me was definitely the Smashed Fried Chicken with Sambal Sandwich. This surprised me as I was expecting a classic like Kaya Toast to stand out, especially since it’s been on the menu for years and has had time to be perfected.
Instead, what left me wanting more was this modern creation that looks like it could come from any of your favourite fast food restaurants. The chicken had a crunchy exterior and a juicy, tender interior, while also being seasoned nicely all the way through.
Combined with a savoury sauce, tomatoes and lettuce, every bite was a flavourful delight. However, despite the “sambal” name, this burger was nowhere near being spicy. It’s perfect for someone like me who can’t take spice, but for those looking for a kick, you might not find the heat you want.
Another item that pleasantly surprised me was the Choux au Craquelin. We tried both the Dark Chocolate and Kaya Custard flavours. The best way I can describe it is that it’s the sum of the best parts of a polo bun and a cream puff.
The outside is crispy, while the inside is soft and filled with sweet, delicious cream. I definitely preferred the Dark Chocolate, with its cold, rich, smooth ganache-like filling. For those looking for a sweet surprise that is not too overwhelming, this is for you.
Chin Mee Chin at NEX is certainly a welcome addition to the mall, though I would love to check out the original Katong outlet someday too. If you live near Serangoon and want to find a cosy corner for breakfast, a tea break, or a meal at any point of the day, consider visiting Chin Mee Chin!
