Got a thing for cafes with good coffee, good aesthetics, and even better vibes? One of the most unique cafe concepts (and creative spaces) to have opened in 2022 is 51 Tras in Tanjong Pagar.

The team clearly has a good eye for interior design. It’s a space that can be best described as rustic and industrial, with touches of greenery amid plenty of raw concrete, wood, and brick, giving off a moody, grunge-y feel. Also, doesn’t it remind you of the cafes in Korea?

There are also customised fixtures reminiscent of an art installation — lots of space for your creativity to run wild.

Food-wise, you won’t find anything too substantial here, but the selection of sweets and savoury snacks by local F&B brands make 51 Tras the perfect spot for a midday treat.

Don’t let the high price point of the Aburi Chee Cheong Fun (S$14.50) from SG Chee Cheong Fun by Ben Yeo deter you; it’s a unique dish topped with fried shallots and an onsen egg you won’t find anywhere else.

Fans of Tigerlily Patisserie in Joo Chiat can also get their pastry fix here, but take note — the popular Laksa Quiche, which features a flowy coconut laksa custard, and Muachee Mochi Blondie, sell out rather quickly.

The plated desserts conceptualised by Francis Wong (owner of the now-defunct Non Entrée Desserts), such as the Moon Walker (S$9), a concoction of black sesame mousse, salted caramel, and green tea crunch, are a must-try.

You can inject a little drama into your life with the Ring of Fire (S$16.50), a baked Alaska-style dessert filled with mandarin orange sorbet, pistachio gelato, and raspberry coulis.

What’s 51 Tras without its drinks? Unwind with an Orange Cream Soda or Einspanner (from S$8.50), a trendy Viennese coffee with whipped foam that has been making waves in the local cafe scene.

The cafe also transforms into a bar at night, serving up cocktails and spirits for a relaxing evening of imbibing — count me in!
