What if I told you that you don’t have to travel to Japan to customise your own oden bowl, but can do it right here in Singapore at a convenience store?
Yes, that is 7-Eleven Singapore’s newest concept, drawing inspiration from Japanese convenience stores where you can easily customise your toppings for this traditional Japanese street food.
Being a fan of all things instant noodles, of course I had to go and check this one out!
At the dedicated 7-Eleven oden and noodle station, you can start with choosing between two ready-made combos (each with four toppings) from S$4.50.
Next, you can choose between three bases of Tom Yum Broth, Spicy Meat Sauce, and Meat Sauce. Since I was on a mission, I decided to go with both the Tom Yum and Spicy Meat!
If you’re feeling extra peckish, you could add-on some toppings such as Chikuwa, Hanjuku Egg, Fish Cake, Chicken Cheese Meatball, and more from just S$0.60.
Since this is a convenient store, they cook the instant noodles for you on the spot and pack it nicely into a takeaway bowl.
Here is the result!
I was already famished at this point so I started with the Tom Yum Broth oden.
Although the toppings were delicious, it was not really spicy or tangy enough for my tastes but hey, that might sit well for others.
The Spicy Meat Sauce oden did meet my expectations with its flavours and a hearty kick from the spiciness.
There is also a surprisingly adequate amount of meat in the sauce that was filling. Personally, I liked this one more than the Tom Yum one.
The verdict? As an instant noodle connoisseur, I would stamp 7-Eleven Singapore’s oden with approval for late night meals and/or after-club meals!
