Going to the movies is increasingly expensive these days — a regular weekend ticket will cost you about $14.50 — but thankfully, this cool new spot in town has film screenings for free. To catch the incredible line-up of award-winning films, check out the newly opened ArtScience Cinema at the ArtScience Museum.
The current line-up includes films such as Dune, Fantastic Mr. Fox, as well as Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao’s The Rider. Very few cinemas in Singapore offer such a good mix of popular favourites, film festival highlights, and award-winning documentaries — so we’re glad to see this new addition to the film scene.
And the best part is: some of the screenings — such as Fantastic Mr. Fox and Where the Wild Things Are — are absolutely free. There’s also a special promotion for Dune currently going on, so you can catch the movie for just S$8.
What’s unique about the cinema is that they offer surround-sound wireless headphones, as opposed to using speakers, so you can fully immerse yourself in the movie. We’re sure the people who are bothered when others speak during a movie will be glad to hear this. And as someone who often finds cinema audio too loud, the adjustable headphone volume is also a welcome change.
The cinema will present a curated selection of films all year round, with the films being switched up every once in a while. The current line-up is part of the programme, We Tread in a Garden of Spells, which celebrates our important connection with the sacred land beneath our feet.
With its thought-provoking films and cosy new space, the ArtScience Cinema is a great spot for a movie date or a casual outing with friends. And if you find yourself with time on your hands after the movie, you can always grab a bite at the SweetSpot cafe or check out the various exhibitions at the museum.
