Travel across Malaysia from Singapore onboard the luxurious Eastern & Oriental Express that’ll be returning to the rails in February 2024

by Christabel Tan

Most of us tend to take the usual way of travelling: commuting to Malaysia by car, bus, or motorbike, and taking flights to destinations around the world. However, if you’ve always wanted to try the lesser-explored way of travelling via a train ride from Singapore, now’s your chance!

Ready to finally embark on an enchanting escape to Malaysia onboard an iconic luxury train? You’re in luck, as the Eastern & Oriental Express will be making its highly-anticipated return to the rails in February 2024 after a long hiatus.

Two new seasonal journeys that’ll take you on a voyage of a lifetime have been launched. In Essence of Malaysia (February, November and December 2024), you’ll depart from Singapore through Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Penang.

Alternatively, Wild Malaysia (March to October 2024) will travel through unseen, rural East Coast towns and lush jungles, and onwards to Penang.

Depending on the package you choose, you’ll get to embark on wildlife excursions at Taman Negara National Park, unwind at Pulau Payar Marine Park in Langkawi, explore Penang Island with your choice of cultural immersions, and so much more. Either way, it’ll be the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration — my kinda holiday.

Both itineraries will get you three nights of accommodation onboard the luxury train that perfectly exudes the charm of a bygone era.

You’ll be welcomed by your dedicated 24-hour butler into the handsome green and cream carriages, and into your exquisite air-conditioned cabins decked in cherrywood panelling, lavish Thai silks and Malaysian embroidery.

Indulge in the ultimate form of relaxation as you lounge in your cosy private cabins, but don’t forget to stop by the Observation Car for a bit of breeze and even better views of the ever-changing Malaysian landscapes.

All meals are fully provided, so you can start the day with breakfast served in your cabin, and then proceed to the Restaurant Cars for the rest of your meals. It’ll be like a “Malaysian restaurant on rails” serving up elevated Southeast Asian cuisine.

From your three-course lunch and afternoon tea to a four-course dinner with a seasonal table d’hôte menu including coffee, tea and petits fours, you can look forward to a luxury fine dining experience laced with Peranakan flavours — all while taking in the scenic sights.

No train journey is complete without a tipple or two, so adjourn to the Piano Bar for a post-dinner nightcap as you enjoy an evening of lively entertainment.

All house wine, house spirits and local beers will be included throughout your journey. Otherwise, premium drinks and other drinks ordered to your cabin will come at an additional charge.

Package prices for both Wild Malaysia and Essence of Malaysia start from S$4504 per person and vary according to travel dates, so you’d better start planning!

Despite the hefty price tag, you’ve got to take into consideration that every package comes inclusive of all accommodations, meals, drinks, activities, and even a 24-hour steward service from start to finish.

Regardless, this is slow travel at its best, so a voyage onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express is a luxury travel experience travellers should try at least once.
