Watch aerial performers, life-size seagulls, clowns and more take over the Esplanade at this free whimsical circus fiesta

by Marcus Leong

Circuses are pretty fun — think carnival games and theatrical acrobatics. It’s been a while since we’ve had some real circus acts have graced our shores, until now. Returning for the first time since the pandemic is the wildly popular Flipside, so get ready for 10 days of circus, comedy, puppetry and more!

Taking place from 26 May to 4 June 2023 at Esplanade Theatres by the Bay, the festival will feature a line-up of international and local acts. Best of all, admission is free! So you’re free to roam around and catch the circus troops do their thing.

One of the must-watch performances is the Aerial Open Stage. As its name suggests, the performance is entirely air-based, and yes, you’ll see lots of people flying around — literally. I’ve always found aerial performances to be very entertaining but also very anxiety-inducing at the same time just watching them swing around and leap in the air. Kudos to them but I’ll remain grounded for now.

Is it really a circus if you don’t see any clowns? Fortunately (or unfortunately), Flipside also celebrates the wonderfully imaginative world of clowning, physical comedy, and street arts. That’s right, there will be plenty of clowns here — I know which performances I will be avoiding. Get a good laugh from the absurdities in My Dream, Circus Olympics, and Bakeke as they find the most complicated ways to do the simplest tasks.

This year, puppetry takes centre stage but these puppets aren’t like your regular Sesame Street characters or sock puppets. These puppets take on the form of roving Seagulls —  yes, those annoying birds that will steal your food and make a lot of noise. Watch as these larger-than-life birds take over the Esplanade — public nuisance or a great photospot? We’ll let you decide.

Hailing all the way from Taiwan, Circus Park shows us how to have fun in an urban landscape, with the help of everyday objects. These acrobats will improvise games and invite you to re-imagine play that transcends age and rigid functionality. Although, just remember that these guys are pros so maybe don’t try performing the dangerous stuff at home.

There’s so much to explore across 10 days at this free festival! From musical performances, to humour and improv comedy, and even craft activities, it’s certainly gonna be a fun-filled week for the whole family.

Are you ready for an exciting weekend at Flipside?
