Gioia is a cosy Muslim-owned Italian joint with DIY pizzas, calzones & sandwiches in City Hall

Can never get enough of affordable and authentic pizza?

The next time you find yourself with cravings for Italian cuisine, but are not in the mood to splurge at a more upscale restaurant, look no further than Gioia near City Hall MRT.

The humble pizzeria, that also happens to be Muslim-owned, occupies a tiny unit in Capitol Singapore with really limited seating, so be prepared to either wait in line, especially since all pizzas, pasta, and sandwiches are freshly made to order, or get your food to go.

The stars of the show are the 10-inch pizzas, with the most expensive option priced at just S$15. You can keep it simple with a classic Pizza Margherita (S$10) or Pizza Pepperoni (S$13), but the Pizza Tartufo (S$15), comprising cheese bechamel, mozzarella, chicken, mushrooms, and truffle oil, seems to be the crowd favourite.

All pizzas can be made with either an Original or Oregano crust — we say go for the latter if you prefer your pizza to be more herb-forward. If none of the fixed menu options are up your alley, you can even create your own pizza (from S$10) with all the toppings your heart desires.

Alternatively, why not enjoy your pizza in the form of a Calzone (S$13), which is essentially a fun-to-eat folded pizza stuffed with gooey mozzarella, beef pepperoni, and mushrooms?

But if you’re somehow not in the mood for pizza, take your pick from the selection of Cheese Steak Panino(i), featuring elements like bell pepper, onion, grana padano, arugula, cherry tomato, and your choice of protein on Italian white bread.

For the unitiated, panino is the term for a single Italian sandwich (you may be more familiar with its plural form, panini) that can be easily consumed on the go.

Gioia may specialise in pizzas and sandwiches, but you can also keep a lookout for other seasonal specials like the truffle cheese pasta, a creamy, dreamy combination of aromatic truffle pate and grana padano — yum.

PS. why not hit up the neighbouring Honeybee for halal ice cream parfaits for dessert?
