This futuristic go-karting arena in Sentosa lets you play real-life versions of Mario Kart complete with special powers, LED lights, sound effects & more

By now, we’re pretty familiar with the popular Mario Kart game. And what if we told you that there’s a place right here in Singapore that lets you play the game in real life? Well, kinda.

HyperDrive Sentosa at The Palawan @ Sentosa is a three-storey indoor go karting arena with a 308m-long circuit and fully electric karts that can travel up to 50km/h

Unlike your usual go-karting circuit, the circuit here comprises a series of sharp turns, hairpin corners, and even slopes to make your driving experience even more thrilling.

Apart from the adrenaline-inducing track, HyperDrive also offers a go-karting experience that is unlike any other — the Game of Karts racing experience. Complete with power boosts, ‘bombs’ and attacks, the Game of Karts racing experience is the first of its kind in Asia.

All I can say is the ride really tested my competitiveness. The game is pretty simple, you’ll just be driving the kart through the track.

Along the way, there’ll be bonuses like ‘weapons’ and ‘boosts’ that can help you sabo your friends and give you an advantage. Look out for the different icons and lights on the track to score these bonuses. Oh and did we forget to mention that you’ll need to be really good at multitasking?

What’s really cool is that the karts are all equipped with a sensor that will detect the bonus you collected. When the bonus is activated, the kart will automatically speed up or slow down your opponent’s kart — kinda like in a game of Mario Kart, except there’s no banana peels here.

Another cool feature of the Game of Karts is the entire racetrack will be lit with neon lights and background sound effects to simulate being in a game. Not gonna lie, with all the lights, and the sound effects, it really felt like I was in a game.

Pro tip: it’s best to collect and utilise your bonuses ASAP as the bonuses are located pretty close to one another. Also, don’t be too greedy about the bonuses — learned that the hard way.

The Game of Karts racing experience is offered only for the senior karts, which requires racers to be at least nine years old and 140cm tall. Apart from the Game of Karts, HyperDrive also offers your regular go-kart racing with different karts for varying skills.

There’s also an in-house cafe called HyperDrive Cafe with 110 seats that overlooks the tracks so you can watch all the action unfold right before your eyes while you enjoy some diner-style classics.

Prices for the Game of Karts experience starts from S$55 on peak hours from Monday to Friday 2pm to 9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 9pm.

Prices for off peak hours start from S$45. While prices are a little steep, you do get plenty of fun and I’d definitely come back again for sure.
