If you’ve been to Japan, you’ll probably know that one of the best times to visit is in the months of spring. However, that also means travel prices tend to soar during this period. Well, there’s a cheaper alternative to satisfy those Japanese cravings (while you plan your next visit) — ISETAN Sakura Matsuri

The highly anticipated cherry blossom festival will be happening from 14 to 26 March 2023, and you can expect to see some 33 renowned Japanese brands taking part. Plus, North-siders will be delighted to know that it’ll be held at NEX Atrium

Some highlights of the food fair include well-marbled wagyu skewers (S$13) from Niku Master, Hashimaki (okonomiyaki wrapped around chopsticks, S$5), and eel skewers (S$4) from the famous Tsukiji Unagi Shokudo. Who says you need to go all the way to Tsukiji Outer Market to get a taste of oh-so-tender unagi grilled to perfection?

Most of us will be familiar with this classic street food — you’ll find authentic Takoyaki going for just S$9 from Nakayama Shokuhin. Consider trying the lesser-known Otaru Bonki (S$8), which is a deep-fried octopus snack that’s soft on the inside with a crispy exterior. Plus, you can even get Japanese fried chicken (S$6) that has received the gold award in the Karaage Grand Prix for three years in a row (yes, that’s a thing!).

Craving for seafood? Indulge in affordable braised and fried seafood (from S$8.50/100g) like soft shell crab, shellfish, and more from Ijima Shoten

For the perfect ending to your meal, you can also look forward to a large variety of tantalising desserts. It’s no secret that Japan is known for having some of the sweetest strawberries around, so you defo need to check out this Strawberry Crepe (S$10) that’s filled with fresh whipped cream and Japanese strawberries.

Other sweet treats include Strawberry Shaved Ice (S$10), spring-inspired donuts from S$5.80, and even the cutest Japanese sponge cakes (Ninkyo Yaki, S$4.50) with fillings like red bean and chocolate.
