Koufu launches initiative in cai fan stalls to have a colour-coded pricing system by end 2025

by Cheryl Lim

Anyone who knows me knows that Koufu was basically my second home back in the day. And anyone who knows me now knows that I’m an absolute cai fan fanatic — my Instagram bio was literally “caifan lover” for ages.

So, this news? Absolutely life-changing (admin is a tad bit dramatic). No more getting bamboozled by the cai fan uncle’s ever-changing pricing… well, sort of.

Koufu has just launched a new colour-coded pricing system at Hong Le Mixed Veg Rice stall in Plantation Plaza’s Koufu food court on 24 March 2025. And, they plan to roll it out across all their 77 outlets by the end of 2025.

This move comes in response to public frustration over the “inconsistent” pricing of economy rice, something that’s been debated online for years (admin might have been on a Reddit forum).

Many people have called for cai fan stalls to clearly display prices instead of making customers guess how much their meal will cost only after the uncle scoops everything onto the plate (it’s actually lowkey fun as a game though).

So, how does the system work?

Each dish now has colour-coded labels. The Green tag is for vegetables, the Orange tag is for meat, the Blue for seafood, and the White for premium items.

Prices for the first three categories will be listed on a price sheet at the stall, while premium items (like my beloved sweet and sour fish) will have their prices directly written on the labels, meaning no more mysterious “market price” nonsense.

But let’s be real. Grumbling about cai fan prices has always been a part of the Singaporean experience. I guess, those post-lunch rants might just become a thing of the past.

And, with this, at least we know what we’re getting into before loading our plates.

Koufu is setting the standard, but the real question is whether other food courts (yes, I’m looking at you, Broadway) will hop on the bandwagon.

I, for one, am 100% here for this.

Are you?
