by June Ngooi

Although we do not have the season of fall here in Singapore, locals do look forward to the joys and celebrations of the Mid-Autumn Festival! From colourful lanterns to delicious mooncakes, we also bask in the artistic installations of gorgeous light installations to commemorate this festival.

So mark your calendars for the following light-ups this year that you can catch a glimpse of with your loved ones and family this Mid-Autumn Festival 2023. Best of all, admission to all of the features below are completely free!

1. VivoCity “Garden of Lights”

Overlooking the harbour stands VivoCity, a mall that is beloved to the hearts of locals because of its destination and variety of retail shops. On top of that, adding to the attraction this September are adorable light-ups featuring Sanrio characters (Hello Kitty, anyone?) in zones across the sky park on level three of the mall.

The displays will be lit up from 6.30pm daily, presenting gorgeous aesthetics to add to your Instagram profile. Seize the opportunity to stroll along the 50-metre long Sanrio Characters Friendship Bridge as well as the Hello Kitty Garden Maze, with the main attraction being a seven-metre tall Hello Kitty!

Enjoy the street light-up spanning across a few kilometres from New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road, to Upper Cross Street for Mid-Autumn Festival 2023 at Chinatown. Amidst the amazing light up feature, there are also exciting activities that you can participate in with your family and friends! Look out for the main feature, which is an eight-metre diorama along Eu Tong Sen Street.

3. Gardens by the Bay “Garden of Blooms”

This year, the Mid-Autumn festivities at Gardens by the Bay return with a brand new installation titled Garden of Blooms at the Golden Garden. This feature boasts a secret garden that showcases different flora and fauna significant to Chinese culture such as lotuses, peach blossoms, and even bamboo.

But what I’m excited for is the Magpie Bridge installation at DragonflyLake, which is inspired by the Chinese mythology of The Cowherd and The Weaver Girl. As exciting as these two installations are, don’t forget to check out the rest!

Jurong Lake Gardens have always been a prominent place of interest for the fellow Westies of singapore. For Mid-Autumn Festival 2023, the lake gardens are donning magical lantern displays inspired by the beauty of orchids lining the entrance arch.

Don’t miss out on the lantern lit Echoes of Lion City that pays homage to Singapore’s history and displays the essence of hope and endurance our early ancestors had.

5. Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall “Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival”

It would not be the Mid-Autumn Festival without a touch of Chinese culture, arts, and heritage and Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) is the central icon for all of them!

This year, SYSNMH has teamed up with different clan associations to present different programs that you can sign up for with a focus on dialect cultures of the Chinese community in Singapore.

Of course the annual outdoor lantern installation is returning and this year’s main attraction is aptly titled “Mid-Autumn Paw-Trait”, featuring two adorable giant panda lanterns that you must be sure not to miss!
