Unwind over canelés, European-style brunch & dessert skillets at Muslim-owned cafe Mondays in Bugis

by Christabel Tan

Bugis is home to plenty of exciting eats, including some of the most happening cafes and restaurants in Singapore.

It’s time to banish those Monday blues at Mondays, a Muslim-owned cafe serving coffee, canelés, European-style brunch & skillet desserts.

Not to be confused with sando and coffee joint Monday Coffee Bar in Ang Mo Kio, Mondays is housed in a charming Scandinavian-industrial space along Jalan Klapa.

The cafe specialises in canelés, a small French pastry boasting a soft and tender custard centre and a dark, thick caramelized crust. Although canelés are typically flavoured with rum, the cafe’s version is alcohol-free, and can hence be enjoyed by everyone.

Go for the Original at S$4, but if you prefer the flavoured canelés, which are available in Matcha, Dalgona Espresso, Raspberry Truffle, and Valrhona Chocolate Seasalt, those are priced at S$6.

You can also find an extensive selection of sweet and savoury dishes served in skillets.

Indulge in the delectable Dessert Skillets, which include the likes of the Peach Crumble Crêpe (S$15), crepe with caramelised cinnamon Corsican peach, crumble, and Chantilly cream, as well as the Lemon Meringue Pavlova (S$15), pavlova with lemon curd, torched meringue, crumbs, and lychee.

Moving on from the desserts, the savoury European-style dishes served in skillets, such as the Truffle Cèpes Bow Tie & Melted Cheese (S$15), Steak & Eggs (S$28), and the Miso Pacific Cod (S$32), are also not to be missed out on.

Rosti lovers can go for the Chili Con Carne Rosti (S$24), potato rosti with tomato Angus minced beef and red kidney bean stew, poached eggs, melted cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes, and pickled green pepper. Super hearty and comforting.

Pair ’em skillets and canelés with your choice of coffee, iced speciality drinks (Onde Onde Latte, anyone?), teas, or mocktails.

Even though the cafe is ironically not open on Mondays, you can totally have a fresh start on any day of the week!
